iLearners Inc. Multimedia Library to improve Learning in Rural Cebu

4 March 2017, Montebello Villa Hotel – iLearners Inc. launches iLibrary in time for its 10th year of reaching out to the pupils belonging to communities challenged by poverty and illiteracy in the rural areas of Cebu, iLearners Inc. is intensifying its efforts in promoting literacy and improving the way pupils learn through this latest program.

The iLibrary is a multimedia library, which incorporates physical books with other tools for learning that are beneficial to a pupil’s learning in the digital age. The iLibrary will consist of (3) book shelves of paper books, an art section, two (2) units of computer, an AV (Audio/Visual) set and a music station. The iLibrary will be installed in three of iLearners Inc. ‘s beneficiary public primary institutions – Lunas, Kaluangan II and Caohagan Elementary Schools situated in Carcar, Asturias and Caohagan Island Mactan respectively.

“The iLibrary will surely boost the students’ interest to learn and arouse creativity,” exclaims Andrew “Doyzkie” Buenaviaje , iLearners Inc. President and Founder. “I am excited for the completion of the first multimedia library to be installed in Lunas Elementary School before the year ends, “ Buenaviaje added.

“iLearners Inc. is delighted that Montebello Villa Hotel sides with our advocacy and has showed their support by awarding us with a music station, which is one of the components of the iLibrary.” Doyzkie shared.

“We believe in iLearners’ advocacy which aims to eradicate illiteracy especially in the grassroots level. Supporting iLearners would mean supporting literacy since they do not give something that only lasts for a day or two. Rather, it is one of the most basic needs, that is education. It is through education that the youth learns the basic skills needed to survive as adults in the new world. Thus, molds them to become a successful individual in the future – who knows we’ve inspired the next Steve Jobs,” expresses Luis Martin Alvarez, General Manager Montebello VillaHotel.
“Music is life, and we believe the youth deserve to learn more about it, even at such early age. To begin with, a school without exposing the students to music is not a comprehensive education due to the proven academic, social, and personal benefits that it offers. And, in exposing the students from rural areas to today’s music technology, we will never know the difference it can make to them; it might aid in unleashing unique skills and talents from the youth of Lunas Elementary School that can make a profound change in the world,” Mr. Alvarez added.

Mindanao is one of four Philippine eagles inside the facility labeled as “Ambassadors for Education.” These birds give the visitors of the Philippine Eagle Center a glimpse of their grace and at the same, have guests learn facts about the remarkable bird specie.

CebOurEagles6

Mindanao the Philippine eagle‘s adoption strengthens Cebu Pacific Air’s commitment to act on environmental conservation issues that are greatly linked to the country’s rich biodiversity. Cebu Pacific Air’s Director of Products Ms. Apple Ignacio hopes that by adopting Mindanao the Philippine Eagle, it  would encourage people to take part in saving our Philippine Eagles, one of the most endangered bird species in the world today. The adoption of Mindanao the Philippine Eagle costs Php125,000 a year.

Ms. Apple Ignacio, Cebu Pacific Air Director of Products

Ms. Apple Ignacio, Cebu Pacific Air Director of Products

Philippine Eagle Center has 33 Philippine Eagles under their care and has contributed hugely in the study of preserving these beautiful bird specie. Today, there are less than 400 Philippine eagles in our Philippine forests. With Cebu Pacific Air’s contribution to the facility though Mindanao’s adoption, this would go a long way in educating people and  help protect these magnificent birds. And you too can help #CEBourEagles! Visit www.PhilippineEagleFoundation.org to know how.

Slipper Race raises P260K for Bantay Bata 163

Project Happy Feet Slipper Race where over 300 participants walked their way in slippers around the 1-km jogging track and completed team challenges to raise P260,000 for Bantay Bata 163’s Bantay Edukasyon Program.

Crimson Mactan's Director of Rooms Rhett Villaluz and Project Happy Feet Founder Terence Quek turning over the check to Bantay Bata 163

Organized by Crimson Resort & Spa Mactan, the slipper race is a fund raising event started by Project Happy Feet LTd, a Singapore based non-profit organization whose project principle Crimson adopted. This requires 100% of the registration fee of the event to be given to the chosen beneficiary which must support education and training of children, and at the same time absorbing the operational cost of organizing the event by the organizing committee or finding sponsors.

This year’s event has been generously supported by our suppliers and friends in the industry. This include our mother company, Filinvest, Cebu Pacific, PLDT Alpha, Del Monte, Nature Spring, BDO, Modern Mega Gasul, Mactan Rock, Sunpride, Dragon Fireworks and Uratex. Our media partners included Alcordo Advertising, Cebu Daily News, Sunstar, The Freeman, Ishow, Monster Radio, Basic Graphics, Optima Typographics, and Cebu Photographer’s Club. The race after party and awarding was supported by Ric Fish Dealer, Chony Fruit Stand, JMS fuel resource, Fantaztic fine foods, All Filipino food, Richel Fish Vendor, Helbert and Christian , Archie Duhaylungsod, San Miguel Foods and Ormoc Pineapple.

The race always starts with a 1km ceremonial walk which puts all participants on the shoe of the students and children who had to work kilometers just to go to school and get education. When it was time to play, the teams showed their competitive spirit in accomplishing all 6 pit stops which required team work and coordination among group members to efficiently accomplish the challenges.

Each year the games and challenges change so repeat teams will be kept guessing, and there were quite a number of them. The stops for the resort edition race featured the resort’s team building activities such as aque duct, giant sack race, crossing the lava bed and shadow walk. Among other challenges was the word search and blow your mind.

Emerging victorious were teams from Quest Hotel & Conference Center Cebu, who finished third, Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) finishing second and also the raffle winner for the roundtrip Cebu-Narita tickets from Cebu Pacific and this year’s champion was the team from media partner Monster Radio.

Cebu Literary Festival 2015 received over 500 books for iLearners Inc

A book drive to benefit the libraries of Lunas, Caohagan and Kaluangan Elementary Schools, held at the recent Cebu Literary Festival, yielded over 500 books from individual donors and from big publishing houses like Anvil Publishing and Ateneo de Naga University Press.

“We are glad to be part of this effort to bring the best of Philippine writings to our communities in the Visayas. We believe that books like bridges are indispensable structures in any developing country,” says Kristian Cordero, deputy director of the Ateneo de Naga University Press. He was in Cebu to launch Jun Dumdum’s new book of poetry “Eighty-Four Words for Sorrow” as well as introduce a catalog of new books published by the Jesuit university’s publishing arm. Andrew Buenaviaje, who heads the non profit group iLearners Inc. is grateful for this partnership with Cebu Literary Festival, now on this second year. “Cebu is really lucky to have an avenue to celebrate literature. And attendees not only learn from the event but also get to impart knowledge and share by donating their pre loved books to the people who badly need literacy support. Books donated during the event would be a great addition to the libraries of our adopted schools; and the children’s books would surely delight the pupils from pre-elementary to grade 2 which we will be reading to them during our Reach-out-and-Read Program. Heartfelt gratitude to the people behind LitFest, it’s attendees who dropped by our table and donated and publishing houses Anvil and Ateneo de Naga University Press,” says Andrew.

Cebu Literary Festival is organized by Little Boy Productions and Cebuano Studies Center. Featured this year were noted historian Resil Mojares, poets Jun Dumdum, Merlie Alunan, Nikay Paredes, Tim Tomlinson, and Larry Ypil, writers Jessica Zafra, Bambi Beltran, Insoy Ninal, Ian Casocot and Jona Bering, and performance artist Carlos Celdran. More information at the Facebook page of the Cebu Literary Festival.

Books donated during LitFest to be used for iLearners Reading Program

The day was celebrated through talks, moderated conversations, exhibits, presentations, a book launch and music and poetry jam by Cebuano personalities such as NYC Playwright Linda Faigao Hall, Jay Chiongbian, Mark Deutsch of Happy Garaje, The Other(ed) Woman’s author Hope Sabanpan Yu and many others.

iLearners at litfest

The free event was  attended by literary enthusiasts and students from different colleges in the metro. The Literary Festival wouldn’t be possible without the passion and love for everything literary of Little Boy Production’s Hendri Go and author Ms. Hope Sabanpan Yu.

Really ecstatic that iLearners was part of the first ever Literary Festival in Cebu. With iLearners Inc.’s effort in improving  literacy in rural Cebu, I was invited to talk at LitFest about how we, iLearners Inc., are “Promoting Literacy across Mountains and Seas.” The 15-minute talk happened at 12:30 noontime discussing our approach and program implementation. Also an iLearners booth was accepting book donations from the attendees of the event.

The children’s books that you have donated will be used for our Reading Program in one of our adopted schools, Caohagan Elementary School. Research found that reading to children is a proven early literacy intervention. (Source: www.reachoutandread.org)

iLuvCebu’s Follow up Relief Distribution at Guinsolungan

This is how Guinsolungan Elementary School looked like when we visited the school last November 24, 2013.  2 weeks after getting hit by Typhoon Yolanda (internationally called typhoon Haiyan), the school’s roofing were opened and some flew due to the strong winds, The school’s stage which they were using as a makeshift classroom for the Elementary’s graduating class was totally destroyed. iLuvCebu Team together with iLearners, ACRE and JPNY visited the school to conduct a Play Therapy session with the students and distributed relief packs.

April 18, 2014, Good Friday. iLuvCebuTeam together with iLearners,  revisited the school for a follow up relief distribution, at the same time inspecting the school and students’ condition. Lively green colors from the trees gave us a sign that somehow they were recuperating from the devastation caused by the typhoon. The roofing of the school’s main structure was partially fixed and the school’s stage got a new roofing job as well.

120 students from Grade 1-6 got relief packs with canned goods, toiletries and clothes from iLuvCebu Team, Mejia family and Almaden Country School students in San Jose, California. Guinsolungan Elementary School students were all smiles as they receive the small gifts we brought them. A message from the overjoyed and thankful  Guinsolungan Elementary School’s head teacher Mrs. Maria Victoria Gulbe, “Magpasalamat mi ug dako sa iLuvCebu, Mejia Family, sa mga estyudyante sa Almaden Country School ug sa tanan nihatag  ug hinabang ug pahalipay sa amo ug sa amo mga estudyante diri sa Guinsolungan, salamat gyud kaayo.” (Thank you very much to iLuvCebu, Mejia Family, students of Almaden Country School and everyone who gave help and gifts for all of us here in Guinsolungan. Thank you very much.) .

It was indeed a very meaningful and fulfilling Good Friday for the team.

To our friends in San Jose California and to everyone who supports iLuvCebu and iLearners literacy and charity works, the team sends our heartfelt gratitude.  We hope you continue supporting our cause.

For most of the students, it’s their first time in the city and the enthusiasm was evident as their eyes wander with excitement as we visit one place to another. Though some students who weren’t used to traveling and commuting for long hours  took the toll and got motion sickness. But thank God for oil liniment and old style hilot from the teachers, they recuperated fast and get to learn and at the same time enjoy the Educational Tour. Lunch was provided by our awesome kabarkada, Greenwich Pizza. And the kids were also treated with yummy cupcakes from Sweet Little Things.

And a side trip to the mall before hopping back into their van to the Carcar added an extra inch to those happy smiles.  We went to Ayala Center Cebu where they participated in some of the Earth Hour Events. They even left a message on the freedom wall!

Caohagan Christmas Joys 2013

December 15, 2013. It was a sunny Sunday as we assembled in Marigondon Wharf to hop on a pump boat to the beautiful island of Caohagan where one of our adopted school is – Caohagan Elementary School. We were scheduled to leave the wharf at 8:30AM but SM Supermarket delivered our Christmas packs an hour and a half late and left the wharf at 10:30AM.

Caohagan Christmas Joys 5

The boat ride takes around 25-60 minutes depending on the tide. Since we left the wharf late, the tide was already low which caused us an hour to  to reach the island. It was around 11:30AM as we arrived the island and have to shorten the program so we can give the food in time for their lunch.

Kaluangan may have been protected by the mountains from the strong winds brought by Super Typhoon Yolanda, but the flood caused threat and danger amongst its residence. Gladly no one was hurt. Big rocks and the river  itself were displaced due to the strong water current from the mountains during the typhoon as per the head teacher.

iLuvCebu holds Play Therapy for the Kids of Daanbantayan victimized by Typhoon Haiyan

November 24, 2013, Sunday iLuvCebu together with non profit organization iLearners and partners ACRE Ballroom and JPNY Ballroom went to Paypay Daanbantayan to do Play Therapy to 150 students of Guinsolungan Elementary School. Daanbantayan is a municipality in the Northern part of Cebu province which was badly hit by typhoon Yolanda/ Typhoon Haiyan.

The school with 3 classrooms was declared unsafe after the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit the province last October 15, 2013. And after the strong typhoon, the school’s roofing were opened and some flew due to the strong winds and the school’s stage which they are using as a makeshift classroom for the Elementary’s graduating class has been totally destroyed.

Guinsolungan Elementary School Daanbantayan

Most of the kids and families are left with houses with no roofs over them or  houses totally destroyed Mrs. Victoria Gulbe, Head Teacher at Guinsolungan Elementary School recalls her experience with teary eyes, “Perte namong hadluka atong adlawa sa bagyo. (We were so scared during the typhoon. The wind and rain was so strong. When our roof started to fly, I tied a rope on my elderly relatives unto each other so whatever happens we will still be together. Then just right after going out of our house and then the big tree went down and slammed on top of our house. Now we are homeless but we are thankful to God we got spared. And today, you are here to extend some cheers to our kids and their families. We are very much thankful to Him.)

Volunteers of the Play Therapy get to talk to the kids on how they are now and play with them. RJ Carabio, a graduate of BS Psychology and Dave Bargamento of the  National Nutrition Council Region VII spearheaded the games. Play is a child’s natural medium of self-expression. The benefits of Play Therapy would greatly help them cope up with the the recent calamities hitting Central Visayas. Play Therapy does not just reduces anxiety but also promotes self confidence and develops a sense of trust in self and others.

Mass feeding and giving of relief goods to the kids and their family closed iLuvCebu’s Play Therapy program. To all the volunteers and to our brothers and sisters who donated and made Play Therapy project possible, we are very thankful for sending us your support.

Bangon Bohol

If there are two things that the world has to know about our beloved country then it’s that: one, that the Philippines is an awesome country  and two, we Filipinos stand up for each other like one big family. The recent 7.2 earthquake that hit Bohol and Cebu last October 15, 2013 is one of the strongest shake recorded in our country damaging both province’s beautiful historic churches, houses and infrastructures costing more than a billion pesos. But the disaster has again made our bond as Filipinos even stronger.

Boarded a fast craft at  2Go Terminal in Pier 4 Cebu to join a youth group in Tagbilaran in distributing relief goods to 3 (three) remote areas in Bohol and a destroyed church in support to the #BangonBohol Project. 8AM as Jen Vega of The Freeman and I arrived at Tagbilaran Port and  noticed very visible trails of the strong quake.

The city of Tagbilaran was lucky to incur minimal damage from the quake.  Now, most Boholanos from the city are back to their daily lives. Major groceries, hotels and resorts and food establishments are also back in business. Like Cebu, Tagbilaran is one of cities in the country sending help to the neighboring towns that is badly affected by the quake, even if  Tagbilaran was also a victim of the calamity.

#BangonBohol

After picking up the volunteers’ lunch and cases of water for the relief packs, we were set to go to our first stop, Hunan Buenavista Bohol.  The ride to our first destination was both shocking and heartbreaking. We saw so many houses that had toppled and tumbled down, government structures badly damaged, some of Bohol’s famous chocolate hills turned white as some of them eroded during the tremors and landslides sent boulders of rocks  and trees at the hill’s foot and roads.

Fear of staying inside their homes because of the aftershocks, many families are staying on improvised tents.  The tent town of Hunan Buenavista was our first stop.

Bangon Bohol

This kid they call Doy showed me the improvised  tent where he, his family and brother’s family sleeps. A total of 8 people sleeps inside the tent. Some tents even houses 3 (three) families or  12 people.

It’s good to see that people get to smile after that scary ordeal.  One mother even narrated  her experience laughing . She mentioned that it was like a clip from a movie, as everything was shaking and in a swirling blur. And she was thankful to God that nobody from her family was hurt after what happened.

Bangon Bohol

The kids laughing as they’re playing under the sun somehow is an assuring sign of hope. That even this will pass and everyone will be able to stand again.

Since it’s already late in the afternoon and we still have 3 stops on our itinerary, we had a quick distribution 0f relief goods in Napo and Kawayan Inabanga Bohol  to 100 families.  We then headed to the damaged Clarin Church to drop some boxes of canned goods and bar soaps. Then off to our last stop, Pangangan Calape. And since the bridge to Pangangan Calape was badly damaged and the bus carrying our relief goods can’t pass, we instead  turned the relief goods over to a person from the municipal office. A fulfilling day for us 12 volunteers, reaching out to more than 750 families affected by the earthquake.

The next day, we headed to the towns of Maribojoc and Loon Bohol to do an ocular on schools for a possible iLearners #BrighterFutureProject in Bohol.  Landslide, cracked roads and a destroyed Abatan bridge were among the sad sights along the way. An even more heartbreaking scene was seeing the wrecked Maribojoc and Loon Churches. Both Maribojoc Central and Loon South Central Schools were also badly damaged by the quake. An old watch tower in Loon wasn’t spared as well. The quake possibly moved the shoreline of Loon. As per a fisher folk we talked to, the water has receded and it stayed that way since the quake.

Relief goods are still badly needed in so many areas of Bohol affected by the quake. You can bring your donations at the following Cebu drop off centers:

1. ABS CBN Complex Jagobiao Mandaue City Cebu

2. GMA Kapuso Foundation, GMA Complex, Nivel Hills, Lahug, Contact Anne Marie Tan at 2320353 or 2314829 for more information.

Rice, water, canned goods, blankets and clothes are badly needed. And refrain from giving noodles and other food that needs water to cook (aside from rice), for most badly affected areas are suffering from water shortage.

This recent calamity that hit Visayas left so many families homeless in the beautiful island of Bohol. You can help the province of Bohol rebuild what has been lost by visiting the awesome island. Why not book a weekend holiday with you and your family at great resorts of  Panglao. Enjoy a great fun holiday and be a #HumanitarianTourist at the same time! \m/

One of iLearners adopted schools,  Lunas Elementary was the beneficiary of  CVG’s WP Cebu Team. Sweat from labor was abandon, as the BPO volunteers painted away to help give a new shine to the old. Others participated and played fun parlor games with the students in the yard which involved; paper dances, singing contests, and other games of wit. iLearners Art Workshop was also done by Lunas’ Elementary Schools Grade 4 & 6. aThere was no time for anyone to be bored with all the painting, playing and painting which allowed everyone to meet, bond with one another and experience different things and lives even if just for a few hours. All in all this tie-up was a beautiful success and iLearners is looking with delight into future of more collaborations to fight illiteracy in the rural Cebu.

iLearners Literacy Day

September 8, 2013. iLearners Inc. is an organization dedicated to minimizing illiteracy in rural parts of Cebu celebrated world literacy day by gathering its members old and new to provide orientation for the new ones and discuss upcoming projects and fund raising plans for 2014 that would help elevate the literacy levels in their adopted rural schools.  International Literacy day was created by Unecso around four decades ago, with the goal to create a heightened sense awareness concerning literacy. It takes a celebration to appreciate what most take for granted which in this case is basic education. According to UNESCO statistics some 775 million adults up to this day are illiterate and about 60.7 million are not attending school.  iLearners Literacy Day is supported by Sun Cellular and Greenwich Pizza.

July 21, 2013, iLearners Inc. did a follow up on #SipilyoCampaign we did last February 17. 2013  with Para sa mga Bata Citizens’ Network and PDA Cebu (Philippine Dental Association Cebu) at Lunas Elementary School in Calidngan Carcar.

Toothache is one of the  major reasons why students miss their classes and we at iLearners together with PDA-Cebu and PSMBCN  are doing a good effort in teaching the students of our adopted schools proper oral hygiene. Our volunteer dentists did fluoride treatment and tooth extractions.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), :The oral health status of Filipino children is alarming. The 2006 National Oral Health Survey (Monse B. et al, NOHS 2006) investigated the oral health status of Philippine public elementary school students. It revealed that 97.1% of six-year-old children suffer from tooth decay. More than four out of five children of this subgroup manifested symptoms of dentinogenic infection. In addition 78.4% of twelve-year-old children suffer from dental caries and 49.7% of the same age group manifested symptoms of dentinogenic infections. The severity of dental caries, expressed as the average number of decayed teeth indicated for filling/extraction or filled teeth (DMFT) or temporary teeth (dmft), was 8.4 dmft for the six-year-old age group and 2.0 DMFT for the twelve-year-old age group (NOHS 2006).” The report also mentions that 74% of the twelve-year-old children suffer from gingivitis. If not treated early, these children become susceptible to irreversible periodontal disease as they enter adolescence and approach adulthood.
