Mimicing an Italian outdoor garden, a visit to Giardino Gelato Cebu is closely as relaxing as a stroll at a park, but with good air conditioning. A good ambiance is well complimented with delicious Italian ice cream of over 20 flavors. These ice cream varieties are made instore, meaning they are fresh the way it should be. Staple flavors like chocolate, coffee, cookies & cream and vanilla are available along with Filipino favorites like mango and ube. Matcha is also on the list of bestsellers for those who love Japanese tea. Limited and seasonal flavors like the Summer Camp Chocolate is also a must-try – and you definitely should before it’s gone. If you are a coffee lover just like me, why not add a shot of espresso to your gelato for a satisfying cup of affogato. And two sugar-free flavors are also available for those who are trying to cut down on sugar.

Gone are the cold, windy days! Now, Cebu’s back to the normal, tropical 24-34 degree weather. And the warm heat just calls for a cold, refreshing dessert; a serving of Halo-halo maybe, or its Korean version – Bingsu!

Yesterday, we spent the afternoon beach hopping, and the sunny weather made us crave for a bowl of cold dessert. Mango Bingsu’s the perfect idea!

Good thing, Mango2x Dessert Cafe serves a cooling bowl of Mango Bingsu. A bowl of milky snow shaved ice, topped with squares of fresh, sweet mangoes and peanuts, and drizzled with  condensed milk. What I really appreciate about their version of bingsu is that they use fresh ingredients, and with just the right amount of sweetness.

Munch by Pretty Baked gives the Classic French Crepe a Crunch

I have been scouting different food fairs lately in search for something that intrigues my tastebuds. The recent weekend, I found a good deal on home-baked lace cookies at a weekend market in Mandaue which impeccably match my cup of afternoon coffee. But Arya’s lace cookie wasn’t last week’s only food find. Nah-uh! I swung by Sugbo Mercado for a dozen Briquitos – pistachio and white chocolate almonds half and half, but went home with more vittles than what I originally came for.

A stall away from the silvanas dessert stand is “Pretty Baked.” Originally, selling brownies and cookies, the owners had a bright idea of adding “Munch” to their current bill of fare of confections. Munch gives a fresh spin to the classic French crepe by deep frying it , giving the crepe an interesting bite which starts with a flakey crunch on the outside, transitioning to a soft and silky texture on its inner crepe layers, finishing off with a flavorful center.

Pretty Baked: It’s Launching
15th December of last year, Pretty Baked debuted at Sugbo Mercado selling brownies and cookies. They had a lucrative run, with their bestsellers Chocolate Hunk Cookies and Ballin’ Brownies getting sold out on every stint. Though owners had gone hookey last January to attend school, they bounced back a month after with a crackle – adding Munch to the current menu.

What’s unique about “Munch by Pretty Baked”?
Aside from adding an interesting crisp to the classic crepe, Munch by Pretty Baked supports the Save the Mermaids Movement, an action to lessen the use of disposable plastic. The team makes sure that they stay true to their intention, through the use of reusable plastics only.

Also, two flavors – Monkey Business and Mango Tango, are made with fresh ingredients sourced out daily. Yum!

Lace Cookies at Arya’s Cakes and Pastries

When 3PM strikes, it’s been a habit for us Filipinos to partake in an afternoon nibble -a quick grub a few hours before we wrap up for work or school. Many of us turn to a cup of tea or coffee for an extra boost of energy to stay sharp for the remaining hours of the shift. But what’s good to pair with our favorite afternoon beverages?

I recently whiffed a bite of lace cookies I got from a weekend food fair in a Mandaue City mall, which forthwith got me buying a 200g pack – a week supply to match my afternoon cup of coffee. Loved it, so thought of sharing this pairing with everyone. 😉

Lace Cookies from who?
These delicious thin, crispy cookie treats are baked in the house of Arya. And nope, not from Arya Stark’s home but from the self-taught baker Eileen Fe Lozano. Arya is her adorable one-year old daughter, who bears the name of her baking business, “Arya’s Cakes and Pastries.” Barely two-months in operation, Arya’s Cakes and Pastries has already been making a buzz with her main offering -Arya’s Lace Cookies. The brand aspires to share their family’s favorite desserts to Cebuanos at prices that are inexpensive, yet gratifying to the taste. Aside from these delicious lace cookies, Arya’s Cakes and Pastries also sells muffins and soon, cinnamon rolls  drizzled with either cream cheese frosting or chocolate glaze. Can’t wait!

Briquito Silvanas: A Rookie Cebuano Dessert Brand on the Rise

For may of us, a meal is never complete without dessert. And when dining at Cebu’s weekend food fair Sugbo Mercado, Briquito Silvanas is one of the favorite dessert choices by many. Made with cashew meringue mini cake on a popsicle stick which comes in oodles of flavors, Briquito Silvanas is rapidly gaining a fanbase amongst sweet treat lovers.

My nephews and niece recently sampled 12 varieties of  Briquito Silvanas, and these on-the-go-bite-sized-goodness seem to be one of those eats that will leave a mark, making you crave occasionally for a serving or two  of the melt-in-your mouth dessert.

We Cebuanos are known to be one of the pickiest consumers, most of the time demanding to get our money’s worth for every cent spent. Briquito Silvanas has put together a dessert that’s pleasing and delectable to the taste that is made with high-grade ingredients, yet pitched at a reasonable price. A delicious dessert at a price that’s just right!

Briquito Silvanas: It’s Inception
Derived from their mom’s original recipe of the family’s classic favorite moist chocolate-coated Silvanas Cake, the owners tried to make it smaller than the usual size, uniquely placed it on a popsicle stick and made it available in a range of flavors. Briquito Silvanas kicked-off selling at their home address during the third quarter of last year and debuted in November 2015 at Food.ish, a food festival at Linear Park and Ayala Center Cebu. Presently, Briquito Silvanas has been a mainstay at Cebu’s weekend food fair – Sugbo Mercado.

What does Briquito mean?
The name “Briquito” is an endearment coined from two words – the owner’s son’s name and “poquito” the Spanish word for little; hence, the brand’s tagline, “On-the-go-bite-sized-goodness.”

Quality is a definite trait present in all Abaca restaurants and hotel. There’s a misconception though that anything associated with the gilt-edged hospitality group would cost someone an arm and a leg. But the community-based Abaca Baking Company might reverse that wrong impression.

ABC 8

Barely 2 weeks old, ABC is already working with an average of 100 kilos of quality unbleached flour daily used in baking varieties of fresh breads and pastries. Current bestsellers include the croissants (which get sold out in less than 2 hours as per store manager Mr. Sherwin Osabel), cinnamon buns,  bagels and vegetable focaccia. Chocolate Truffle, Lamington and Vanilla Creme Puffs are the house’ pastry top picks. ABC serves fresh grind- Italian roasted Danesi Arabica coffee everyday. An Italian cup perfect for any bread and sweet treats.

ABC 4

Arriving at 4PM for afternoon snacks, the team unfortunately wasn’t able to sample the buttery croissants. Instead ordered something on the All-Day-Breakfast Menu. We had a serving of Bagel with three variety cream cheese spread,  Vanilla and Caramel Lattes and an extra bagel. Olive, salmon and garlic flavored cream cheese are perfect with the fresh bagels!

ABC 7

And had our fill of afternoon sweets too- Mini Chocolate Bundt, Chocolate Cream Puff, Lamington Cake and Choco Chip Cookie Sandwich. Lamington Cake is a soft chocolate  sponge cake with vanilla filling in the middle and textured with desiccated coconut. The Cream Puff has this melt in your mouth custard inside that is deliciously infused with home made vanilla. And my ABC personal sweet treat favorite is the Chocolate Chip Cookie Sandwich – two chocolate chip cookie with vanilla filling and dipped in chocolate. You should try it!

Abaca Baking Company’s pricing is very much like Starbucks. One of my personal pastry picks -Chocolate Truffle caramel is priced at only 35php – and a cup of coffee for less than 100 bucks! And definitely way more instagrammable than any other coffee shops around town, would you agree? teehee!

And who would not notice the awesome  paintings, wall and menu board artworks by Happy Garaje and various artists from The Qube Gallery which add to the homey cafe ambiance.

Lucky to be able to have a quick chat with Chef Jason Hyatt about the upcoming projects Abaca Group is venturing on. Coming real soon is a new Abaca Group Hotel in Mactan and a luncheonette in Fuente. More feats to look forward to from the hospitality group. Chef Jason also had an easter egg revelation about ABC’s kitchen – a group of 4 very talented PWDs bakers.  Just awe-inspiring!

Done with afternoon coffee session, we headed out of the cafe and Mrs. Anna Hyatt sent out a warm smile and a folksy invite, “You should come back at around 7-8AM when croissants are on display. You’ll love it! ”

Enjoyed everything I’ve tasted so far and  will surely be back for more of ABC’s All-day breakfast, coffee, breads, pastries and that buttery croissants everyone is buzzing about!

Butterbean 2

Just cant get enough of Butterbean cookies and brownies? Well, there’s more reasons to get hooked with the popular confection brand. Butterbean introduces the “Butterbean Ice Cream Bar Creations”  where you get to dream up your very own ice cream, the way your like it! It only takes four (4) easy steps for you to conceive your very own frozen dessert fantasy.

Here’s a short walkthrough on how to create your own Butterbean Ice Cream!

(1) Choose your Ice cream Bar shape and Flavor

(2) Choose your Chocolate Coating

(3) Choose any 3 toppings

(4) Choose your drizzle

My personal favorite is Butterbean’s Signature Heart-shaped Strawberry Ice Cream coated in White Chocolate topped with Pistachio, almond shavings and cashew drizzled in dark chocolate! Yum!

Butterbean 1

Famished and not ready for dessert yet? Butterbean Desserts and Cafe also offers fresh and delicious appetizers, all natural-home made soup, healthy salads, pastas and sandwiches and even main entrees for the extremely hungry. Perfect merienda chow for me would be a serving of Butterbean’s Deep Fried Onion Blossom (90php) and Classic  Lasagna (195php) with a delicious cup of hot chocolate or coffee. The hot chocolate comes with a chocolate spoon (choose from white, milk chocolate  or dark chocolate) that adds more chocolatey goodness to the cup. ^_^

And if you are too glutted to stand to check out Butterbean’s Ice Cream Bar, order any of the delicious desserts on the menu! So far we tried and loved both the Butterbean’s Cupcake topped with salted Caramel Ice Cream and Brownie Ala Mode topped with Vanilla Ice Cream and strawberry halve. Lusciously good!

Butterbean 4 Butterbean 8

It’s about lunch time and this writing is making me real hungry. Might run to get a fill of Butterbean cupcakes with Salted Caramal Ice Cream for dessert! Who wants one? 😉

Been to Butterbean Deseerts and Cafe? Share with us your experience, we want to hear from you as well.

Treat Street Cafe

Treat Street Cafe is sure to delight everyone with delectable cakes, pastries and coffee that are familiar but made unique with uncompromising quality using the finest ingredients.

Been hyping about Treat Street Cafe’s Lechon Pie on both my personal and  iLuvCebu’s instagram account. Infusing a Cebuano twist on the traditional meat pie by using shreds and bits of Cebu Lechon, I would not wonder that this one would be a hit among Cebuanos and tourists alike. Start with a crisp bite on the crust then finishing off  to a well seasoned, tender lechon meat that melts beautifully in your mouth.

Treat Street Cafe 3

Treat yourself to desserts that are delightfully good by seasoned cake designer, Trina Ang Kokseng of Cake Couture. After the success of Trina’s pastry line, she decided to open Treat Street Cafe. “Opening a cafe felt like a natural extension for me to hone my passion for great pastries, and to share it with others.” She says. “It’s a place where people can go for dessert or afternoon snacks, where they can enjoy good coffee and delectable cakes. It’s a place where pastries are classic but the atmosphere is cool and modern.”

A few of our favorites are the Treat Street Pie, Honey Toffee Crunch Cake and Green tea Black Sesame Cake.

Treat Street Pie is their own version of the turtles chocolate. Chocolate cookie crust, fudgey chocolate layer, caramel and walnuts topped with whipped cream.

Treat Street Cafe 4

Honey Toffee Crunch Cake. Light and tender white cake paired with honey toffee crunch topping. Yum!

Treat Street Cafe 5

Green Tea Black Sesame Cake. Tender green tea cake enveloped in green tea and black sesame mouse.

One will always find room for dessert. So go ahead and indulge in a slice or two of Treat Street Cafe’s cakes and pastries! 🙂

Chewy Junior 2

My first bite of these chewy treats was way back in 2009.  I was walking around Bugis Junction Singapore and noticed a queue at a stall.  The scent of sweet and freshly baked puffs was irresistible. I was really intrigued and lined up for 20  minutes to get a box of 6 and from then on, I was hooked. So every time I visit the Lion City, I made it a point to munch on my  favorite Chewy Junior Choco Almond Crunch.

But now, I don’t have to fly to Singapore just to have a bite of these heavenly puffs. I can get my fill of the chewy goodness at JCentre Mall, Ayala Center Cebu or at Robinsons Cybergate.

Get to sample every flavors by getting a box of petite Chewy Juniors for just 25php a puff. And when you have picked your favorite flavors, buy the regular sized Chewy Junior to make sure your cravings are satisfied. Regular Sized Chewy Junior is priced at 35php-45php depending on the flavor.

Chewy Junior 5

So what makes every Chewy Junior Puff really good? The puffs are made with special dough, the  cream with soya milk and made even better with a variety of flavors, freshly baked everyday! Yum!

Chewy Junior 1 Chewy Junior 3

Here are a few of the team’s favorite Chewy Junior flavors: Cream Cheese, Chocolate Almond Crunch, Almond Sweetheart, Peanut butter Crunch, Blueberry Glaze Cheese Curd, Butterscotch Crunch, Coffee Muesli Crunch, Strawberry Glaze Cheese Curd and Apple Delight!

Also enjoy different flavored creams on the following puffs: chocolate cream inside Chocolate Oreo Crunch, Skippy Cream inside Peanut Butter Crunch, Cream Cheese inside Cheesecake Premium Puffs and Cookie Butter inside  Cookie Butter puff.

Looking forward to taste the Chewy Junior Premium and Double Premium flavors ( 55php and 65php respectively). Definitely on my next Chewy Junior visit!

Mickey’s Cafe

With a great number of people passing by this road in Escario, this little cafe still seemed unnoticed. Serving a good variety of Japanese cakes, it’s worth a stop to satisfy your dessert cravings and  also an ideal place for an afternoon of catching up with a good friend over Japanese sweet treats.

Been here before for a slice of their best seller Caramel Banoffee Pie, and  thought of trying their other desserts with a good friend Mr. Yoshino, who just arrived from Japan few weeks back.

The orange awning outside somehow makes you think  of halloween, but don’t worry you, won’t be spooked out when dining here(Teehee). The smell of coffee welcomed us as we stepped in,  waitress then greeted us a good afternoon and flashed a half smile before she took  our orders. Seating around 16 people inside and around 8 outside, the cafe is really warm and homy.

————- The Cakes ———

The best seller, Banoffee Pie. Crisp pie crust, with a gelatinous middle, slices of fresh banana topped with whipped cream and then drizzled with caramel. It is not that sweet and the slices of banana and the caramel were very notable. I didn’t quite enjoy the gelatinous texture of the pie though.

Mickey's Cafe

Mickey’s Cafe

Mango and Strawberry Shortcake. Two layers of shortcake, with whipped cream and chunks of mango and strawberries in the middle , whipped cream frosting and topped with a mango ball and strawberry halve. Not that sweet and really light dessert. Love how all the flavors complimented each other as they melt away in your mouth. Yum!

Mickey's Cafe

Mango Cheesecake. Beautiful right? And your heart just breaks as your fork slices over that good-looking cake. Just the right amount of sweetness, but I still prefer the cheesecake made with  lotsa cream cheese though. But this one is a good alternative for those who want a little bit less of the calories from cream cheese. 🙂

Snowballs! For 10php a pop, this one is surprisingly good. It tastes like polvoron with a hard shell and sugar powder coating. Simple pleasures. ^_^

The very simple Ichigo milk did make me smile. 🙂

Mickys 7

The place is really small and is good for afternoon chit chats. I love how the desserts are not that sweet. I think they can do better coffee concoctions though – and the awning as well. ^_^

With some more interesting pies to try from Micky’s, will be back real soon! Next slice is that intriguing Avocado Pie! Who wants to share the Avocado pie with me? 😉

Boom Bites

Architect by profession, Averil Maureen Marguerite “Boom”  Ledesma tells me her story on how she traded the drafting board  for an apron to fulfill her passion in baking.  She worked as an architect for some time here in Cebu, but realized that her real happiness is in making desserts. And you wouldn’t wonder why she’s so passionate about food, for this San Carlos local, is part of the family who put up the Tipsy Chef  Restaurant in Negros, where each of the family members contributed their recipes that made up the menu. And now, she’s baking desserts for the love of it and is sharing her passion with the rest of Cebu. Boom owns the online dessert store, Boom Bites!

Boom runs me through Boom Bites’ menu and some of the goodies that she will be launching real soon. Her very bubbly personality and spontaneity, made the interview easy-breezy and quick.  She did mention some dessert names at some points in our conversation and every time she noticed  a blank stare from me, she was polite enough to explain each hybrid dessert.

—— Boom Bites’ Products  —–

Cebu is teeming with many dessert places and we Cebuanos love to eat out. But let’s face it,  there’s also a great number of people who can’t scoot out of the office because they’re too busy beating deadlines and  those who just need to stay home to hit the books.  That’s why, Boom Bites’ desserts-to-go is genius! Who would’t want to bring desserts with them all the time?

Boom Bites’ multi-layered, desserts- in- a- jar called Pots come in 5 varieties, the Holiday Velvet, Banoffee Pie, Mango Sabroso, Blueberry Cheesecake and the Healthy Banoffee. They can be enjoyed either in Pots (200ml) or Poco Pots (100ml) servings.

Boom Bites Poco Pots

From top left to right, bottom, left to right: Boom Bites Poco Pots Blueberry Cheesecake, Healthy Banoffee, Mango Sabroso, Banoffee Pie

The Holiday Velvet is a personal favorite. Layers of chocolate mouse, chocolate pudding and red velvet cake in a jar. It’s not overly sweet and it’s amazing how everything melts in your mouth. Reminds me a lot of  Fudge’s Tre Colore.

Another favorite is the Banoffee Pot. Layers of Grahams, dark chocolate sauce, freshly sliced bananas and whipped cream.Yum!

Boom Bites Pots

Boom Bites Pots: Mango Sabroso Pot (95php) and Holiday Velvet Pot (95php)

Mango Sabrosa Pots are layers of Mango chunks, cream, graham and crackers.

Blueberry Cheesecake Pots are layers of Graham, Cream cheese filling and Blueberry preserve.

A guilt-free dessert? Have a Healthy Banoffee Pot! Layers of home made granola, date carmel, fresh slices of banana and yogurt. This made me really giddy about Boom’s soon to be launched healthy dessert line up. Really looking forward to that. 🙂

The Chocolate Chamber Cebu

The Chocolate Chamber Cebu

I was feeling under the weather yesterday (and no it isn’t because Valentine’s Day is springing up this weekend 😛 ) so  I drove to the city to find some good eats to shake off the gloomy feeling. Well it’s no mystery that chocolates makes us happy, the good rich mouthfeel of it makes us chirpy already. And gladly Cebu has some superb artisan chocolateries that use  local cacao to supply us with the happy hormones we need , and the 3-month old TCC or The Chocolate Chamber is one of them.

At first, I thought it was Singapore’s TCC / The Coffee Connoisseur that branched out in our metro but learned that The Chocolate Chamber is  an arm of our very own chocolate maker Ralfe Gourmet Inc. Walking in The Chocolate Chamber, you get a similar ambiance when you step in a TWG shop, but with a Cebuano hospitality and chocolate drinks instead of teas. 🙂

It was around 4PM when I arrived, just in time for  TCC’s Chocolate High Tea. The set is served only from 1521-1721 hours (3:21PM-5:21PM).

The Chocolate Chamber

The Chocolate Chamber

The Chocolate Chamber’s Chocolate High Tea consists of Raisin Scone, Lemon Scone, Homemade Marmalade, Pralines, Artisan Sandwiches of the day, green salad and one cup of Hot chocolate of your preferred flavor. TCC’s Chocolate High Tea is priced at 550PHP for the set. The set serves  2 people.

The pralines and the rich traditional chocolate/ sikwate were the highlights of my afternoon!  And now I am smiling. ^_^

The Chocolate Chamber also serves Filipino favorites like chocolate ensaymada and  pandesal . Pizza and sandwich are also on the menu. Cookies and cakes also available.

La Vie Parisienne Cebu

I have always been a very proud Cebuano, and one of the so many things that I can boast about Cebu is the endless list of great food choices we have here and with prices that’s so reasonable. An addition to that list is La Vie Parisienne Cebu.

From one of Cebu’s finest French restaurants, La Maison Rose , comes another delightful French cadeau from the Lhulliers, La Vie Parisienne. It is a French bakery, deli and a wine library.

The smell of buttery dough envelopes as you enter the bakery. On your right is an oven full of fresh bread being baked and on your right, a display of breads and a few collection of wines.

The bread dough are prepared in France and then baked at  La Vie Parisienne Cebu.  So you get the real deal French Croissants for as low as 25php a piece. Bite into the crusty flaky outer layer, then a soft buttery interior – mmmm, so good I tell you. Best enjoyed with a cup of hot coffee.

“Are these really from Laduree France?”- I just have to ask the  the counter girl thrice, and she replied with a smile and an uttered yes with a nod every after I throw her the question. hahaha. I enjoy biting into a crusty exterior then a chewy cookie to a gooey and naturally flavored filling macaron. And the macarons at La Vie Parisienne Cebu  is as good as my favorite  TWG tea infused macarons. <3 My faves are the pistachio , strawberry and lime macarons.

Magkadugay, magkalami! A famous tagline in Argao referring to the food they’re best known for, Torta de Argao. A 2-hour drive or about 2.5 hour ride via bus from the city of Cebu, Cabecera de Argao in Poblacion Argao is a remnant of the Spanish era that is well preserved and maintained. Just a street away from the beautiful Cabecera de Argao and Saint Michael the Archangel Parish Church, is the home of Argao’s original Torta, Chitangs.

It was around 33 degrees celsius and we did not miss the chance to rekindle our love for  Argao’s Guilang Hot Tsokolate! Had a cup of the earthy, creamy and bold hot tsokolate together with the best Torta in Argao at Chitang’s!

So what makes Chitang’s Torta the best in Argao? It’s these two ingredients and the way they bake it! Early morning tuba or locally called lina and lard from the preparation of the humba are mixed into the batter. It is then cooked in an improvised oven, called hudno, using coconut husks as charcoal.

Tymad Bistro

May it be breakfast, lunch or dinner, a sweet little something ends every food affair. We always wrap up a good night with an awesome dessert or great cup of tea latte. For this night,  we unanimously agreed to have cheesecakes and crepes, so we headed to Tymad Bistro. The bistro offers good desserts ranging from 120- 290php. Here’re a few of what we enjoyed that night. 🙂

Tymad Bistro Parfait Au Chocolat, 140php

Tymad Bistro Mango Cheesecake, 150php

Mango Cheesecake would be one of my favorite. Made with Philadelphia cream cheese, the texture is smooth yet a bit gelatinous but you won’t struggle to find the sweet mango taste we love.

Tymad Bistro Blueberry Cheesecake, 150php

Blueberry Cheesecake. Also made with Philadelphia Cream cheese, this is pure smooth layers of cream cheese melting with the blueberry jam in your mouth and finishes with the crunchy crust.

Tymad Bistro Tarte chocolat Aux Noiz, 140php

Tarte Chocolat.  A bit of a tough dessert – it’s like a softer version of a nougat candy but without an overpowering sweetness.

Tymad Bistro Nutella Crepe

Well, no need to explain this. Nutella and crepes are meant to be. <3
