Starbucks PH launches Milk Tea Frappuccino

Who ever said summer ends in May? Well, we live in a country where it is mostly sunny, thus the constant craving for something cold and refreshing is something regular, even if the rainy season turns up for a short time.
One of my go-to drinks to appease my thirst is milk tea, and getting the news from Starbucks PH that they’ll be releasing a Frappuccino version of this all time favorite quencher got me hyped up.
Starbucks Milk Tea Panna Cotta Cream Frappuccino Blended Beverage is made with premium brew black tea leaves, milk and a delicious layer of panna cotta.

Milk Tea Panna Cotta Cream Frappuccino Blended Beverage

Milk Tea Panna Cotta Cream Frappuccino Blended Beverage

This seasonal drink will be released this 5 June until 23 July 2018 together with Starbucks Pistachio Bon Bon Cream Frappuccino Blended Beverage – a blend of ground pistachio nuts with decadent chocolate sauce, topped with fluffy whipped cream and a sprinkle of crunchy pistachio and waffle bits. Prices for both are at P165, P180 and P195 for Tall, Grande and Venti sizes respectively.

So are you guys as excited as I am to try these new drinks from Starbucks? Be sure to drop by any Starbucks Branches nationwide to be one of the first people to get to try these limited offerings this coming June 5.

Bicester Cafe Cebu

International coffee shop brands’ strong presence in Cebu paved way to more local coffee enthusiasts to open their very own cafes. But fresh players in the coffee business may have a big, initial challenge – attracting customers to visit an unfamiliar label. I remember when Bicester Cafe first opened in 2017, and with its very instagrammable interiors, and that Riverdale-ish neon light signs, I was pretty sure that this place will be packed with IGnatic millenials. So would it be accurate to say that a fine-looking cafe can effectively attract customers? Well, Bicester pretty much proved this theory.

But having a charming shop can only get you so far, specially with the Cebuano market. Quality and value for money will be the main factors to keep you going and for followers to keep growing. And gladly, Bicester Cafe passed both values.
Bicester Cafe highlights delicious hot and iced coffee varieties, and an array of blended beverages as well. The most recent serving I had at Bicester was the Caramel Blended Coffee, which is a personal favorite in the blended category. The balance of smoky sweet and coffee tinge’s just right.

After having pink milk shake and Pad Thai at Soi SM Seaside City, headed to IT Park with fellow SM Squad member Marco. Instead of going to the usual barkada’s last stop which is at Starbucks i2, we tried two of Soho Park’s beverages, and a dessert, to cap the night.
Soho Park serves the intriguing Ube Mocha Latte.  Since it was a bit late already during our visit, I asked for a customized ube drink with no espresso and served with less sugar. I fondly called it the Hot Ube White Chocolate with Milk Foam drink.
“Too sweet,” was the first thing I uttered after my initial sip. This introduction might be a bit disappointing, but I am still looking forward to taste the original house concoction. And with less pumps of whatever they’re using to make it sweet next time.

“We want our customers to experience tea like they’ve never imagined. Drawing our inspiration from a love of tea in Asia and from popular new flavors,” “This year, Starbucks takes innovation in flavors and texture to the next level with a unique Frozen Tea platform to satisfy the growing sophistication of consumer preference.” said Keith Cole, head of marketing for Starbucks Philippines.

Starbucks® Teavana® Frozen Teas have been developed exclusively for customers across Asia, delivering a sophisticated and modern tea experience. Starbucks is committed to investing in Teavana in the region as it remains a strong growth driver for the brand.

Commenting on the growing interest in frozen beverages, Davina Patel, global food and drink analyst at Mintel, the global market intelligence agency which follows food and beverage trends in Asia, said: “Our research shows that consumers in Asia continue to gravitate towards beverages with textural and visual appeal, which has led to a growing interest in frozen products. Moreover, consumers are increasingly exploring the world of tea through flavor and variety, with preference shifting towards botanical teas such as herbs, fruits and spices.”

Icy, refreshing and packed with antioxidants, Starbucks® Teavana® Frozen Iced Teas will be available in the following flavors and will also be available as Iced Shaken:

Starbucks® Teavana® Frozen Hibiscus Tea with Pomegranate Pearls

This refreshing beverage combines floral notes of hibiscus flowers and rose petals with the tropical flavors of papaya and mango, enhanced with hints of cinnamon and lemongrass. The beverage is topped with glistening, jewel-like pearls of pomegranate juice that burst on the tongue.

Uke Hub Cafe Cebu

Uke Hub Cafe does not only attract coffee admirers but also those who delight in music, particularly the classic Ukelele. The cafe offers a variety of handcrafted coffee, serves an array of good-tasting sandwiches, and is a ukelele showroom at the same time. The concept cafe incorporates coffee love and ukelele appreciation.

I was dropping off Singapore-bound friends to the airport, but we opted to have lunch at Rico’s Lechon first, then decided to cool off with ice-blended drinks at Uke Hub Cafe. The three of us ordered the Java Chip ice-blended drink, and we love how it’s not as sweet as it looks, and gave thumbs up for the good coffee hint, plus coffee bean chips in every sip that we expect from a Java chip drink. Visiting again soon for a serving of affogato and Hungry Harry Sandwich.

Uke Hub Cafe also hosts ukelele sessions, and classes for those who are interested. Schedules are posted on their Facebook page. They are located at Mactan Arcade, Airport Road Lapu-lapu City. You may phone them at (032) 255 2683. Operating hours is from 10:00AM to 10:00PM from Sundays to Thursdays and 10:00AM-12:30AM on Fridays and Saturdays.

Hello there Car, Phyl and Rex! 🙂

Lovey Doggy Dog Cafe is a prefect place for dog lovers to convene and go larking with the in-house dogs. Dog parents can even bring their own canines to play with the resident tail-waggers, just don’t forget to bring the vaccination cards issued by a certified veterinary clinic and present it to any of the Lovey Doggy Dog Cafe attendants.

The Civet Coffee I.T. Park Cebu: Your Coffee, Four Ways

Many of us who get our cup of caffeine from coffee shops are used to having it prepared with the use of an espresso machine. With its precision, our taste buds are now very much accustomed to each shot – its acidity, notes and taste. One of the coffee houses that originated in the not-so-little little town of Maribago in Lapu-lapu City, The Civet Coffee has now opened its third branch, a venue much closer to everybody who lives in the city of Cebu, and is serving coffee in four ways!

IMG_2436

Sweet, smokey-chocolatey aroma envelopes the maiden outlet three times a week during roasting. The main branch in Maribago supplies the beans that are used in all coffee-based beverages made in the other two coffee outlets – Mactan Newtown and their newest branch in Skyrise 4, I.T. Park.  What’s noteworthy  about The Civet Coffee is that the cafe uses 100% local organic coffee beans, and its remarkable smoky flavor is ascribed to the beans being roasted with charcoal. To set the record straight, The Civet Coffee uses barako, arabica and dutch coffee beans on the coffee-based beverages on the menu, not the civet coffee beans; by request, the cafe serves the specialty civet cup on a 30% civet – 70% barako/dutch beans ratio for Php590 a cup.

For coffee explorers and enthusiasts, trying out coffee prepared in different ways is an exciting experience. And The Civet Coffee might have the right thrill for you, as your caffeine cup is prepared either with an espresso machine, an aeropress, slow drip method or the chemex method.

Civet Coffee Cebu, civet coffee IT Park

Chemex Method

We are all familiar with the espresso machine and how coffee is made using it. Aeropress, on the other hand, is the manual version of the machine. The method ideally produces the same coffee taste in terms of body and acidity as with the espresso machine.

Slow drip method is an aparatus that uses a valve that you can adjust for drip speed, water is released over the top of the bed of coffee grounds, which will travel, drop by drop, into the coffee, eventually saturating the grounds and ultimately extracting into the lower chamber.  The slow drip method gives out a delicate flavor and light bodied coffee .

A new way of preparing coffee at The Civet Coffee, Chemex is a simple method, where one puts a filter on the apparatus,  coffee grounds is then added and water poured over it. The coffee passes right through the filter and produces a brew that is clean, maintaining a light body and balanced note.

Slow Drip Coffee

Slow Drip Coffee

Recommendations? I personally love The Civet Coffee’s Iced Coffee Mocha, as its chocolatey but has a strong, smokey caffeine kick. Try it with the pastries. You might also want to try the new-on-the-menu tea latte varieties. 🙂

Crate Cafe Cebu

For a month now, Diane Kristel de Jesus has been in Cebu to focus on managing the preparations for the opening of Crate Café. Hailing from the capital , Kristel and two of her business partners have an ideal of introducing coffee servings made with fresh coffee grounds from premium beans of the Northern parts of the Philippines to Cebuanos.

The tie-up of a barista, an interior designer + the person who currently has the lease on the address and an auxiliary cohort  as an adviser seems to be a perfect partnership. Their initial business venture together, the trio is banking on their premium coffee concoctions, plus the view of Cebu’s hilly lands as a bonus.

Civet Coffee Mactan Newtown Cebu

Civet Coffee Mactan Newtown Cebu

Branch Address: Ground Floor Two World Center Building Mactan Newtown Building Lapu-lapu City, Cebu

Operating Hours: 9am-1am everyday

WiFi: Yes

Parking: Yes, Mactan Newtown Parking Area

I was on my way to a churrasco party at Ibiza Beach Club and thought of fueling with caffeine first before heading to dinner. There was no parking space available at Starbucks Marina Mall so drove to Mactan Newtown for a cup of coffee at Mister Donuts, but  as I was about to make a turn to the parking lot, I spotted a very familiar logo, CIVET COFFEE!  Just last year, I had the best Cafe Mocha in their pilot branch in Shang Island Town Center and been a fan since, dropping by the cafe whenever I was in the area for a large serving.

Civet Coffee’s second branch has a different ambiance from its predecessor. The Mactan Newtown outlet has a  more “commercial” feel to it; resembling like a mainstream commercial coffee shop with the grey tile flooring, wooden tables and chairs, but the warm lights and the baristas make the cafe a bit homey.

Civet Coffee 2

Civet Coffee is an aspiring third wave coffee place; with the owners having personally concocted the coffee blends from beans they sourced out in Palawan, Bohol, Mindanao and Batangas, which they then charcoal roast in Civet Coffee’s main branch. Just to clarify things, not all beverages served in Civet Coffee has civet coffee beans in it. Though, they serve the special house blend called “Civet Coffee“,  made with 30% civet coffee and 70% Arabica coffee for Php500+ a cup – the only beverage in the menu with civet coffee.

Civet Coffee 3

Civet Cat Specialty Blend: Civet Cat Cofffee made with 30% Civet Cat Coffee with 70% Arabica Coffee

Most of their coffee-based beverages are made from house specialty coffee blends: (1) Wild Blending – a  blend of Robusta and Arabica blends, with beans sourced from Mindanao and (2) Barako Blend-  a bolder and stronger concoction, made from beans sourced in Batangas and Palawan.

One of the new beverages on the menu is the Barako Aeropress Coffee; made with Civet Coffee’s Barako blend, hand-pressed and served in less than three (3) minutes. A bold and dark coffee with a smokey hint. Enjoy it either hot or iced. (Price: 130Php)

Also new on the Civet Coffee Menu are Red Ginseng, Gugma/Sweet Potato and Black Bean Tea Lattes. Interesting tea concoctions believed to have health benefits – Red Ginseng for endurance and stamina; Sweet potato helps in loosing excess body weight.

Quality is a definite trait present in all Abaca restaurants and hotel. There’s a misconception though that anything associated with the gilt-edged hospitality group would cost someone an arm and a leg. But the community-based Abaca Baking Company might reverse that wrong impression.

ABC 8

Barely 2 weeks old, ABC is already working with an average of 100 kilos of quality unbleached flour daily used in baking varieties of fresh breads and pastries. Current bestsellers include the croissants (which get sold out in less than 2 hours as per store manager Mr. Sherwin Osabel), cinnamon buns,  bagels and vegetable focaccia. Chocolate Truffle, Lamington and Vanilla Creme Puffs are the house’ pastry top picks. ABC serves fresh grind- Italian roasted Danesi Arabica coffee everyday. An Italian cup perfect for any bread and sweet treats.

ABC 4

Arriving at 4PM for afternoon snacks, the team unfortunately wasn’t able to sample the buttery croissants. Instead ordered something on the All-Day-Breakfast Menu. We had a serving of Bagel with three variety cream cheese spread,  Vanilla and Caramel Lattes and an extra bagel. Olive, salmon and garlic flavored cream cheese are perfect with the fresh bagels!

ABC1

ABC 7

And had our fill of afternoon sweets too- Mini Chocolate Bundt, Chocolate Cream Puff, Lamington Cake and Choco Chip Cookie Sandwich. Lamington Cake is a soft chocolate  sponge cake with vanilla filling in the middle and textured with desiccated coconut. The Cream Puff has this melt in your mouth custard inside that is deliciously infused with home made vanilla. And my ABC personal sweet treat favorite is the Chocolate Chip Cookie Sandwich – two chocolate chip cookie with vanilla filling and dipped in chocolate. You should try it!

ABC 5 ABC 6

Abaca Baking Company’s pricing is very much like Starbucks. One of my personal pastry picks -Chocolate Truffle caramel is priced at only 35php – and a cup of coffee for less than 100 bucks! And definitely way more instagrammable than any other coffee shops around town, would you agree? teehee!

ABC 3

And who would not notice the awesome  paintings, wall and menu board artworks by Happy Garaje and various artists from The Qube Gallery which add to the homey cafe ambiance.

Lucky to be able to have a quick chat with Chef Jason Hyatt about the upcoming projects Abaca Group is venturing on. Coming real soon is a new Abaca Group Hotel in Mactan and a luncheonette in Fuente. More feats to look forward to from the hospitality group. Chef Jason also had an easter egg revelation about ABC’s kitchen – a group of 4 very talented PWDs bakers.  Just awe-inspiring!

Done with afternoon coffee session, we headed out of the cafe and Mrs. Anna Hyatt sent out a warm smile and a folksy invite, “You should come back at around 7-8AM when croissants are on display. You’ll love it! ”

Enjoyed everything I’ve tasted so far and  will surely be back for more of ABC’s All-day breakfast, coffee, breads, pastries and that buttery croissants everyone is buzzing about!

Amidala Cafe

Amidala Cafe

Around 3PM and the expected snail-like-speed Valentine’s Day traffic was already building up had led me snacking at this Star Wars concept cafe in Juana Osmena. Been itching to visit Amidala Cafe and finally had the time to drop by yesterday.

Expecting it to be a Star Wars concept cafe, I actually had a hard time spotting the place with the signboard isn’t that Star Wars-y or even Queen Amidala-ish. Good thing I know how to read. hahaha. AMIDALA! So if you are planning to drop by, just look for this:

Amidala Cafe

The cafe was enveloped with beautiful aroma of coffee as I entered. The force is indeed strong in this coffee bar, as Stormtrooper and Darth Vader helmets and wall decals welcomed me to the cafe. Was pretty excited to wear the helmets the moment I saw them on the counter. Who wouldn’t! (yeah, I know am such a dork! haha) And don’t miss to drop by Master Yoda’s meditation room located just across the lavatory.

Amidala Cafe 1

Amidala Cafe

Amidala Cafe

Occupied the upper area where Darth Vader decal is installed and where you get the best view of whatever is shown on the flat screen TV. Ordered the Jedi’s Elixir (99Php) , Choco Loco Espresso Chiller (140php), Amidala Sandwich (Bacon, Letuce and Cheese Sandwich at 80php) and a cookie (30php).

Choco Loco Espresso Chiller is very much similar to Bo’s Coffee Crumble (a personal Bo’s Coffee Fave) where you get to feel bits and grits of coffee beans every time you sip. Love the drink with just one shot of espresso.  But it could’ve been darker (and I think better) with two! ^_^

Jedi’s Elixir is blue soda with a slice of lemon. 🙂

And the Amidala Sandwich is good but could have been a bit more regal befitting the price. With Padme’s name on the sandwich, it demands to be more glorious.

Amidala cafe 4 Amidala Cafe 2

Growing up watching Star Wars, I am glad that a SW concept cafe opened in the metro -and serving good coffee too! Thanks and congratulations to the brilliant minds behind Amidala Cafe. Though am praying for them to add a good selection of food items and pastries on the menu. And maybe add some Padme’ mementos in the coffee shop? After all,  it’s named after her right?

So have you been to Amidala Cafe? Tell us what you think.

Got a weak spot for pretty places! And Soda Cafe at the Raintree Mall has cuteness on every corner of  the room. If the colossal stuffed mouse at the centre of the cafe does not make you go aaahw, then step inside the squatting areas and be greeted by charming stuffed play buddies. ^_^

Soda Cafe 2 Soda cafe 3

Each cubby hole has power outlets so you can charge your mobile devices while you chill or study with your friends or classmates. Since it was a solo flight for me that afternoon, I was joined by Mr. Grumpy Owl to help me  nibble on my overly sweet snack. Teehee. Wouldn’t mind giving this cute cafe a second visit sometime to try their other offerings.

Treat Street Cafe

Treat Street Cafe is sure to delight everyone with delectable cakes, pastries and coffee that are familiar but made unique with uncompromising quality using the finest ingredients.

Been hyping about Treat Street Cafe’s Lechon Pie on both my personal and  iLuvCebu’s instagram account. Infusing a Cebuano twist on the traditional meat pie by using shreds and bits of Cebu Lechon, I would not wonder that this one would be a hit among Cebuanos and tourists alike. Start with a crisp bite on the crust then finishing off  to a well seasoned, tender lechon meat that melts beautifully in your mouth.

Treat Street Cafe 3

Treat yourself to desserts that are delightfully good by seasoned cake designer, Trina Ang Kokseng of Cake Couture. After the success of Trina’s pastry line, she decided to open Treat Street Cafe. “Opening a cafe felt like a natural extension for me to hone my passion for great pastries, and to share it with others.” She says. “It’s a place where people can go for dessert or afternoon snacks, where they can enjoy good coffee and delectable cakes. It’s a place where pastries are classic but the atmosphere is cool and modern.”

A few of our favorites are the Treat Street Pie, Honey Toffee Crunch Cake and Green tea Black Sesame Cake.

Treat Street Pie is their own version of the turtles chocolate. Chocolate cookie crust, fudgey chocolate layer, caramel and walnuts topped with whipped cream.

Treat Street Cafe 4

Honey Toffee Crunch Cake. Light and tender white cake paired with honey toffee crunch topping. Yum!

Treat Street Cafe 5

Green Tea Black Sesame Cake. Tender green tea cake enveloped in green tea and black sesame mouse.

One will always find room for dessert. So go ahead and indulge in a slice or two of Treat Street Cafe’s cakes and pastries! 🙂

Coffee Prince Cebu

Coffee Prince Cebu

Korean Cafes are a big hit in the metro. With the fresh and fun twists, Korean cafe concepts have been a mainstay in Cebu’s ever growing coffee scene.I’ve been to a lot of Korean concept cafes in Cebu, each with their unique vibe and beautiful interiors, but it all boils down to the quality and taste of their coffee beverages, and the food.  Most Korean cafes serve coffee concoctions that are too sweet and with no food choices other than the Korean cafe staple, honey bread.

I was lucky enough to get first dibs on Coffee Prince Cebu and got to try some of the beverages and food on the menu of the soon to open Korean cafe. Coffee Prince Cebu is inspired by the 2007  Korean hit drama  “Coffee Prince.”   Owners even mentioned that baristas and waiters wear the signature white polo shirt with black vest and black slim pants uniform that main character Go Eun Chan (played by Yoon Eun Hyle) dons  in the series. Lots of  cute stuffed toys shipped from Korea are ready to be stationed at the coffee shop the soonest the interior is done. I was also told that each cubicle will be lined up with lights that changes color and bead curtains are adorned along the cubicles. The  exterior walls are painted blue with beautiful sunflowers. Sunflowers are famous in Korea. The flower even has its own festival called “Taebaek Sunflower Festival,” happening every August in Guwau Village where a wide array of colorful wildflowers and endless fields of sunflowers are in full bloom.  I know you are imagining how the the cafe would resemble and excited to see on how exactly the cafe would look like when done, but don’t you worry, will soon post photos of the interiors once they are finished. 🙂

Now,  some thoughts on the beverages and food I tried when I dropped by the Coffee Prince training kitchen. It was a very humid afternoon and what a perfect timing because I’ll be sampling three of the house’s best cold blends. (1) Matcha Frappe (2) Java Chip Frappe (3) Strawberry Smoothie.

The Matcha Green Tea has a well balanced green tea taste and sweetness. Topped with a cloud of cotton candy, it adds a level of sweetness to the drink. The Java Chip Frappe has a swirl of chocolate syrup and chocolate chips and with the right amount of sweetness, I can still taste the hint of coffee in the mix. Lastly, a refreshing strawberry smoothie with real strawberries. All drinks can be topped with either whipped cream or cotton candy, your choice! 🙂

And Chocolate waffle! With the size almost as big as my face, this can be shared by 2-3 persons. The awesomely chocolate waffle is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Topped with whipped cream, 2 scoops of chocolate ice cream, drizzled with chocolate and caramel syrup and Oreo cookies, Coffee Prince’s Choco Waffle is a real treat! It would be more perfect though if the waffle is a bit more buttery, but nonetheless it’s one good tasting waffle!

It was in 1950 when Mr. Hideyoshi Goto opened a shop and production facility in a mountain area of Gifuken Japan. The location was a good source of fresh and natural ingredients that gave Fujinoya Cake Shop’s pastries  a fresh and natural taste. In 1978, Chef Hideo Goto, the eldest son of the founder, gave Fujinoya an added range by baking western cakes using Japanese techniques, sticking to the Fujiniya tradition of using only the freshest ingredients. Just before heading to the Make Your Own Havaianas 2014 special event, I dropped by to get a quick coffee fix and a fill of sweet treat at the newly opened Fujinoya. Red bricks lining the plant boxes and the  wooden oak accents from the outside of the cafe somehow gives me a  warm country homey feel. The cafe interiors are elements of brown and oak wood with 2 lanes of brown wood pentagons line the middle ceiling. The wall on the counter is in brick red with the menu written on chalkboards. The baristas’ station is tiled in pure white.

The 2 storey cafe and bistro has al fresco dining areas on both the 1st and second floors, common dining areas on both floors as well, and a function room.

On the Menu

Just right after having a cup of beautiful Caffe Latte and delicious caramel eclair,my cravings kicked in and decided to gorge on a Fujinoya Meat Sauce Burger and Wasabi Burger. Don’t be so quick to judge, I  just grazed on half the serving of each and had the other halves for to go. 😉

Don’t you just love a good latte art? From a great latte art, one can sift a select barista from the second-rate. And at Fujinoya, the staff are trained well in the art of preparing coffee including enhancing their creativity in the form of latte art. Fujinoya believes that the skill in making a cup of coffee is important in  producing the best brew. And was a bit chirpy with the cup of Caffe Latte I had earlier, with just shots of espresso and milk with no sugar added, it was coffee the way I like it! (Hot Caffe Latte, 120php | Get 50% off on you next refills on hot drinks)

Fujinoya’s President Carlostito Gothong was kind enough to share some coffee knowledge he learned both from being a barista and from him reading articles about coffee from the internet. And you might wonder who makes all the vibrant pastries on display? “Chef Goto stayed here in Cebu for 3 months to train me in baking  Fujinoya’s signature desserts. During his stay, he made sure that the ingredients used are at par with the ones used in Japan. The secret ingredients are from Japan. After undergoing an extensive training, today I make all the desserts in Fujinoya Cebu myself,”  says the 3rd year entrepreneur student.

The Caramel eclair was just the right amount of sweet to give those happy hormones a boost. A crisp bread with custard on the inside and caramel on top. (85php)

Meat Sauce Burger (220php). Char broiled burger patty, with home made meat sauce, lettuce and tomatoes on a green tea and wheat bun, sided with wasabi french fries. Really juicy and flavorful patty, made even more flavorful and meaty with the meat sauce.

Gladly I had halves of the burger and hotdog for take out or else i’d be slobbering right now. hahaha. But am even more excited to try the other entrées on the Fujinoya menu soon. Next on my Fujinoya piggin’ out list are Ox Tail stew, Teriyaki Ribs and the Tonkatsu Curry. Care to join me on my next Fujinoya adventure?  ^_^

After watching the movie  Hercules, it was my never ending craving for milk tea and coffee that led my dad, iLearners confrere Lui, consociate food blogger Marco and I, capping the night at this 3 day old cafe in Banilad with movie blurbs, travel plans and sharing some good points on coffee and tea over icy coffee blends.

Cafe Talk has a similar structure with Korean cafes Cafe Tiala, Cafe Namoo and Cafe Noriter. Cafe Talk implemented the same blueprint as the other Korean cafes I cited – 2 level  configuration which is brilliant, maximizing the space to accommodate more customers.  With the arched windows and  fancy porch grills, the interior decorating looks like those classic haciendas in Spain or customary villas in Venice we see in magazines and movies. And toting up those exhaust fans at the private cubicles solves one  problem we always complain about in the other cafes, now making the cool air circulate around the exclusive areas as well.

We ordered Iced Macchiato and Jave Chip Frappuccino. Both drinks are refreshing but a bit too sweet. The Iced Macchiato was too milky that you can’t even taste the espresso. The Java Chip was chocolatey and bits of chocolate are noticeable but again no hint of coffee. (Bill for the 2 drinks, 305php)

The baristas and waitresses are really smiling, accommodating and  really friendly. Just hope the coffee blends would improve and be better as they close in to their grand launch. Wouldn’t hesitate to drop by for another visit though and try the other Cafe Talk offerings on the menu  real soon. ^_^

It’s awesome to have great friends and family around. We get together as much as we can and each of those meet ups involve some heavy pigging out ( teehee, don’t judge). After taking care of some papers for our organization, iLearners Inc., at the Lapu-lapu City Hall, we were supposed to have lunch at Cebu Burger, which according to Atty. Ethelbert Ouano, has the best Veggie Burger in Cebu. Unfortunately, the restaurant had already shut operations for more than 2 weeks now. Aaaahw! That feeling when you’ve already gotten yourself all excited in anticipation then suddenly you’re hit with the hard news that you won’t get to have a taste of it. To those who have news on where Cebu Burger has transferred, please let us know. Still looking forward to eating that sumptuous burger as described by fellow foodie, Atty. Ethy.

Well, we may have been saddened by the closing of Cebu Burger, but as per the Robinsons,  “Keep Moving Forward!” On the brighter side though,  Atty. Ethy, Edd, Amy and I discovered this coffee shop, Civet Coffee. We first had lunch at one of our favorite restaurants in Maribago Mactan, Gold Mango Grill then went back to Shang Island Town Center to try some coffee offerings at Civet Coffee.

Don’t you just love it when you smell fresh brewed coffee when stepping inside a coffee shop?  What’seven more  awesome is that they use local beans from our neighboring province, Bohol. B

The charcoal roasted beans are enhanced with a smoky sapor which give them that bold, and earthy flavor.

That #Miming Art on my Hazelnut latte is too cute! What I love about the latte I ordered is its boldness. The creamy and smooth milk added a soft hint to it.

Civet Coffee’s Cafe Mocha, is by far the best cafe mocha I had. The experience starts with a creamy light froth, then a bold earthy kick softened by the chocolate and then ends with a clean smoky zing.

Though we weren’t able to try the house specialty yet, which is Civet Coffee sold at 750php per cup with 30% Civet Coffee, we loved what we tried so far. That made us more giddy in trying the house specialty. Soon soon!

Below, are Civet Coffee Beans. And yes they came out of Civet Cats bottoms. hahaha. 😛

And another interesting thing at Civet Coffee is this slow drip Coffee apparatus. Though I haven’t asked the barista on how the process enhances the flavor of the coffee, it looks really interesting and the scent that oozes out of the apparatus smells absolutely great . ^_^ Surely I’ll be asking the barista when I get to have another cup of coffee at Civet Coffee.

With a great number of people passing by this road in Escario, this little cafe still seemed unnoticed. Serving a good variety of Japanese cakes, it’s worth a stop to satisfy your dessert cravings and  also an ideal place for an afternoon of catching up with a good friend over Japanese sweet treats.

Been here before for a slice of their best seller Caramel Banoffee Pie, and  thought of trying their other desserts with a good friend Mr. Yoshino, who just arrived from Japan few weeks back.

The orange awning outside somehow makes you think  of halloween, but don’t worry you, won’t be spooked out when dining here(Teehee). The smell of coffee welcomed us as we stepped in,  waitress then greeted us a good afternoon and flashed a half smile before she took  our orders. Seating around 16 people inside and around 8 outside, the cafe is really warm and homy.

————- The Cakes ———

The best seller, Banoffee Pie. Crisp pie crust, with a gelatinous middle, slices of fresh banana topped with whipped cream and then drizzled with caramel. It is not that sweet and the slices of banana and the caramel were very notable. I didn’t quite enjoy the gelatinous texture of the pie though.

Mango and Strawberry Shortcake. Two layers of shortcake, with whipped cream and chunks of mango and strawberries in the middle , whipped cream frosting and topped with a mango ball and strawberry halve. Not that sweet and really light dessert. Love how all the flavors complimented each other as they melt away in your mouth. Yum!

Mango Cheesecake. Beautiful right? And your heart just breaks as your fork slices over that good-looking cake. Just the right amount of sweetness, but I still prefer the cheesecake made with  lotsa cream cheese though. But this one is a good alternative for those who want a little bit less of the calories from cream cheese. 🙂

Snowballs! For 10php a pop, this one is surprisingly good. It tastes like polvoron with a hard shell and sugar powder coating. Simple pleasures. ^_^

The very simple Ichigo milk did make me smile. 🙂

The place is really small and is good for afternoon chit chats. I love how the desserts are not that sweet. I think they can do better coffee concoctions though – and the awning as well. ^_^

With some more interesting pies to try from Micky’s, will be back real soon! Next slice is that intriguing Avocado Pie! Who wants to share the Avocado pie with me? 😉

Bravely situated in an area very near where restaurants die down unnoticed (even a big fastfood brand wasn’t spared), a second wave coffee place called Degree 9, may potentially change the area’s “dead spot” reputation.

Stepping inside Degree 9 Coffee, no one greets or welcomes you to the cafe. haha. I guess I am just really used to getting my coffee at Starbucks, Bo’s and Korean Cafes where baristas are all smiles. And ordering something here is nearly similar to ordering at a vending machine. Or maybe the baristas just had a bad day, so let’s give them a slack. 🙂

Degree 9 Coffee

The place isn’t crowded, really quiet and all I can hear were mumbled chit chats from the people at the next table. And as far as I can remember, there wasn’t any music playing on the background. 🙂 I love how one wall is white-tiled up to the ceiling where sleek white tables and red chairs are lined up, then a bricked wall at one corner with comfy white seats and  green decors, wooden dividers at the middle aisle with black seats, ideal for seating two guests.

I ordered the Cream Puffs and Latte. I love their latte as its not that sweet, creamy and smooth but still bold. And an attempted  coffee art is appreciated. <3

The cream puffs are wonderful. Really light and not that sweet. Crunchy crust then it gets spongy soft on the inside until you reach the lightly tarty lemony cream and it all melts away together inside your mouth. Yum!

Degree 9 Coffee’s Snowflakes, a Korean version of Halo-halo? hehe. It’s a bowl of ice with lots of sugar in between the ice shavings topped with chunks of mango and sweetened red bean and cherry. I love sweets but this ones too sweet for me. It was like eating ice with refined sugar.

Degree 9 Coffee

The coffee and the cream puffs were really good and I could see myself slothing here on a rainy afternoon, drinking latte and enjoying those heavenly cream puffs. The sleek chic interiors of Degree 9 Coffee also educated me that not all Korean Cafes are about posting messaged post-its on the walls or having an overly- cute- I-wanna- die decor. 🙂 And open 24 hours and free WiFi, come on, it’s a perfect spot to make tambay tambay! haha

I wish their baristas could be a bit friendlier and I think the place would be perfect. 🙂  And parking space for diners is very limited. Hope they can also open the building’s parking area for customers.

This is just a first impression, will be back real soon for a follow up review.

Cream puffs anyone? 😉

Right after Gillian (bydetails.blogspot.com) and I chose a winner for Waterfront Cebu’s Easter Egg design contest, I suddenly had a latte craving. So I drove straight to this new cafe in Lahug. Still on it’s soft opening, this week old cafe looks promising. But I don’t want to get my hopes up until I get to try their offerings.

The cashier and the waiter welcomed me with smiles as I approach the counter. I smiled back and greeted them both a good afternoon. I ordered cafe latte  then asked the waiter for food suggestions. He tipped Beef Stroganoff Pasta, Cheesesteak Sandwich and Twin Chops. Initially thought of ordering the Chicken Parmigiana but remembered that my 40 day of no pork , no beef lent sacrifice ended today.  I totally deserve a big sandwich brimming with juicy beef strips smothered with lotsa’ cheese! Aha! Cheesesteak sandwich it is!

I chose to laze at the comfy looking couch with hindi looking patterns at one end of the cafe, where I leeched some power to charge my iPhone. Teehee 😛 . And have you noticed the inverted-coffecup hanging lamps? Pretty neat right?

Tazza Cafe and Patisserie Cebu

Opposite from where I’m loafing and sipping on my latte, is a very colorful door. And no it’s not a portal to Neverland or to the Easter Bunny’s den but the toilet. ^_^

Though I’d say this to a cupcake and not my cup of coffee(referring to the quote on the wall beside the magical toilet door), I have to say the uneven textured wall’s clever.

And this is the snuggest looking couch in the cafe. And its situated just beside this very French looking office door. ^_^

Do not judge this latte by its looks because it does taste good. I love how its frothy, bold but smooth and creamy at the same time. Cafe Latte, 85php. Also available in cold variety at 130php.

Cheesesteak Sandwich, 195php. Beautifully served on a wooden chopping board, thinly sliced beef, caramelized onions with cheese sauce on a 6-inch bun. I love how juicy the beef slices were, and it did go well with the caramelized onions but the cheese sauce could have been a bit cheesier and thought it might need a bit more pepper to taste. But hey, that’s just me and thats how I prefer my Cheesesteak Sandwich. 😉

Well, this is just my first visit and will definitely visit again to make a follow up review. But so far, I give a thumb up to the very attentive and friendly staff during my visit. I enjoyed my latte and am intrigued and excited to try their other coffee concoctions. And the cafe’s decor and homy ambiance are pluses as well.

I personally think that the type of music played in a restaurant/cafe somehow defines a restaurant/cafe. And I hope they’d be able to compile a better playlist. ^_^

Anyone would like to try  Tazza’s Hazelnut latte with me next time? 🙂
