The Pig and Palm Cebu

“Simplicity with complexity,” exclaimed Michelin-starred British chef Jason Atherton when he was asked to describe his dishes at his newly opened restaurant in Cebu, The Pig and Palm.  “We create simple dishes but each one goes under so many complex procedures,” he explained. The Pig and Palm plays around with natural, familiar flavors layered on top of each other, ultimately creating enticing and flavor-balanced plates that’re simple and complex at the same time, not to mention gratifying. 😉

The Pig and Palm: Food
Jason Atherton together with Manila-born head chef Tim dela Cruz have developed a menu of modern tapas-style sharing dishes, interpreted using the best of Filipino produce. As suggested by the restaurant’s name, dishes will celebrate Cebu’s reputation as a destination for pork, with a focus on pig-based plates sourced from Local farms in Cebu.
The list of appetizers are innovatively pretty exciting. The squid crackers which is mainly made with rice flour and squid ink reminds me of munching on Crispy kangkong, less the oily aftertaste. Kinilaw Shrimp initially gives out a fresh shrimp and papaya crunch, and finishes off with a refreshing coconut milk taste.  The tuna sashimi served with iced Jalapeno gives the Japanese dish a new twist with a light, cool sweet chili kick. Chicken Karaage with Sriracha Mayo seemed to be a perfect pair with just about any of the bar concoctions. And my favorite Carrot in Walnut Pesto – local carrot produce  served with pesto made with fresh basil with a hint of nuttiness. Yum! The Pig and Palm appetizers range from P125.00 to P295.

THE MAIN ACT: Roasted Suckling Pig
One of the pig-based plates on The Pig and Palm menu is Rosted Suckling Pig on soya onion gravy, apple and mustard leaf. For a city that loves lechon so much, this tasty rendition is delectably good and a must-try. It starts with a good initial crackle then advances to the pork’s tender, juicy meat – just like how we Cebuanos love it!
I am looking forward to go back real soon and treat myself to a hefty serving of the coal grilled Australian black angus rib eye. Yum!

It’s a bar, a restaurant & a deli shop in one! Ampersand is conformable to whichever mood you want to fill for the day – a chill drink by the bar,  make-your-own sandwich at the deli area or a hefty meal at the restaurant.

The Restaurant

The indoor dining area is set at the middle of the space, with the bar on the right and the deli section on the left. Ampersand’s bedecking exudes a mix of classic chic but with a modern appeal; and the warm lights give an overall inviting, homey and intimate allure to its charisma.

Ampersand2

The Food

Using mostly fresh produce, Ampersand’s kitchen promises crisp flavors and interesting mix of local and international sapor.

Started our feast with a glass of Hendricks Jive, the house’ special concoction made with Hendricks gin, basil mint and strawberries. The Roasted Kalabasa Soup was next on the bill which came a few minutes after -interesting smokey and creamy base with squash bits; made me want an additional serving the moment my soup spoon hit the base. Gladly, it didn’t took long for the mains to be served. Had the Ampersand’s 32-day dry aged Prime US Angus Rib Eye first, which instantly became my personal favorite – done medium rare, perfectly juicy and tender, and was awesome with the caramelized onions and gravy. The Seafood Risotto also made my personal list of must-go-back-and-eat-this-again list at Ampersand. And the Fresh Strawberry & Mango Pavlova and the Chocolate Ganache Cakes were the perfect feast ender.

Impressed with what my first Ampersand experience, you wouldn’t wonder seeing me here frequently. See you? (Raising my glass of Ampersand’s K8) Cheers! 😉

Formerly La Bella Napoli, the well loved Italian bistro has been constantly adding more entrees to their menu to entice the Cebuanos (and international guests) even more with authentic Italian dishes. Now La Bella Pizza Bistro, they stay true to their promise of quality and only the best ingredients in every course they serve.

iLuvCebu team recently visited their 35-seater al fresco branch at The Gallery Mabolo and took the liberty of sampling  the newest addition to La Bella Pizza Bistro’s carte.

La Bella 1

Enjoyed a glass of Spritz (150php) as I watched the pizza dough being kneaded, topped and baked on the traditional wood fired-brick oven. Spritz is a wine-based cocktail made with wine, Aperol and soda water.  A great aperitif to prepare me for the feast to come.

La bella 3

And yes, all pizza doughs are made fresh – moments after you place your order. All pizzas are then topped with premium ingredients and baked on classic wood fire- brick oven for less than 10 minutes. And for mozzarella addicts, the selection served with fresh mozzarella are must-try pizzas.

La bella 2

La bella 5

For our appetizer, we had Parmigiana di Melanzane (Price:300php). A lovely combination of baked tomato, mozzarella and fried eggplants that melts sumptuously together in your mouth. Yum!

La bella 4

And then a serving of pasta to share – tortelloni alla bolognese (320php). The pasta looks very similar with tortellinis but a bit larger. The fresh handmade ring-shaped pastas are stuffed with mixed meat in Bolognese sauce.

La bella 7

And oh boy,  the delicious smell of freshly baked pizza as its been taken out of the oven! uuuhrg!  (gets you real giddy! ^_^) Principessa had me at mozzarella (and arugula.. tehee)!  Made with tomato, fresh buffalo mozzarella, parma ham and fresh arugula – it’s currently my new favorite pie at La bella Pizza and Bistro!

La bella 8

“Eel pran-zoh erah de-lee-zee-oh-so, grah-zee da-veh-roh La bella Pizza Bistro.”

Do you love La bella Napoli/ La bella Pizza Bistro too? Tell us your favorites, we’d like to try ’em too! 🙂

You also can enjoy authentic Italian fare at their other branches at Koa Tree House in Gorordo, Piazza Elisea in Talamban and Karancho in Maribago.

Everything Yummy

Everything Yummy

Everything Yummy‘s menu is a list of food the owners love, prepared with passion from a cook’s heart. Everything Yummy is all about good food bringing people closer together.

Everything Yummy was born from home and out of the desire, joy and delight of Christmas gift giving. It was in December 2010 when their  first signature dish, the barbecued ribs, was crafted. They wanted to give something unique, something that can be shared by the family, and something that will be remembered.  And their friends loved the ribs! The next month, they got their first bulk order of what was to become item #1, the barbecued ribs, on the Everything Yummy menu.

The restaurant opened their first store in Piazza Elesia in October 2011  (more about the branch here:http://www.iluvcebu.com/everything-yummy/) and  just recently expanded its reach by opening a branch at Ebloc I.T Park.

Their I.T. Park branch brings their select delectable menu much closer to the heart of the city. A more convenient location to enjoy Everything Yummy’s signature dishes like Barbecued Ribs, Singaporean Pepper Prawns, Spanish Chorizo and some new additions like French Cut Porkchops and Ribeye Steak!

EY9

A plate of Basmati Rice topped with tender Chicken Curry. This dish is lightly spicy, just a hint of curry to flavor the tender chicken strips.

Everything Yummy Chicken Curry

Everything Yummy Chicken Curry

Still my favorite on Everything Yummy’s menu, the Lemongrass Chicken. Love how the skin and outer layer is peppery crispy and flavorfully tender on the inside.

Lemongrass Chicken

Kudos to the restaurant for being thoughtful enough to always serve the best part of the rib. Their Barbecued Ribs is honey sweet with a lightly smokey flavor and the best part is the tender, fall off the bone meat! Yum!

Everything Yummy Barbecued Ribs

And if these two dishes don’t make you drool, then you must be out of your mind. The Rib Eye and French Cut Porkchop are addition to my EY favorites. The Rib Eye is rubbed with herbs and spices, grilled and done to your liking.

EY6

A pint of ice cream for sharing is definitely a perfect way to end a great meal! Good thing that Everything Yummy carries select flavors of Carmen’s Best Ice Cream. Try the Salted Caramel, it’s so far the best one I’ve tried.

The feast didn’t end that day for I brought home a box of ribs for my dad and brothers. And very timely for Christmas, The Barbecued Ribs is a great gift for family and friends which comes wrapped and ready to give as presents. The ribs lasts for two weeks when stored in the freezer. Just microwave it or oven heat it and serve. 🙂 250php and Carmen’s Best Ice Cream Gift Certificates are also available at their branches.

Have you dined at Everything Yummy? Tell us what you think? We’d love to hear from our readers!

Tides also added a station that the little ones would definitely love, the Kiddie Station! Kids get to choose any food from a spread of kids’ favorite dishes and even get the food themselves since the chafing dishes are reachable by kids as tiny as 3 feet. And yes, candies as much as they want!

Tides 3

Cebu is known for having the best roasted pig recipe in the country. And when at Shangri-La Mactan, you don’t have to go outside the hotel to get your fill, for Tides is serving roasted pig  fresh from their kitchen’s very own charcoal pit every dinner. Complete the experience by dipping the meat with either liver sauce or  vinegar and chili. Yum!

Tides 13

The spread at Tides is insanely good! With more than 150 really delectable dishes to choose from, dining at Tides is a feast! Risotto, La Galbi at the Korean station, Chicken Cordon Blu at the Western Station and Lechon at the Charcoal Grill and Rotisserie Station to name a few of my Tides buffet favorites.

“People are excited with the re-opening of Tides. While considered the breakfast hub for our in-house guests, we envision Tides as an all-day dining restaurant, market service- style, where guests enjoy the best of international cuisines,” Chef Mark said.

While Chef Alvin is in charge of all Tides activities related to the kitchen – from menu creation, kitchen staff management and restaurant inventory to plating design.  He  joined  Shangri-La Tides Team at an auspicious time, with a fully renovated all-day dining restaurant as playground to showcase his culinary expertise.

“I am truly thrilled to be joining the Shangri-La group for the first time. I look forward to leading the Tides team, especially after a substantial renovation of the restaurant. As an interactive lifestyle restaurant, Tides’ cuisine philosophy is simple – ‘fresh out of the pan, hot off the grill and right out of the oven.’ We are excited to welcome back Tides’ loyal patrons,” said Chef Alvin.

And  I am ending this blog with a shout out to all Tides servers, who deserve to be commended for their outstanding courtesy and service. All of you made our dining experience more snug and cushy. Thank you! ^_^

Tides will officially reopen on October 29, 2014, Wednesday.

No. 9  is an ancestral home in E. Benedicto Street, beautifully renovated into a modern dining space with a classic touch of wood, emanating a delightfully cozy and soothed ambiance. The restaurant who’s barely a month old is quite making a buzz for their Mediterranean and Latin wood-fired cuisine – which most people I know who have tried their offerings describe as unique and exclusive.

The bar greeted us as we stepped inside the restaurant and paced along a few tables on the side. We walked to our right and found a real cushy spot on the sofa with a really catchy red and black portrait of 2 brothers. We ordered the Pork Belly, Fideo Negro, Arroz Con Pollo and Morcilla. Took photos of the dining and the al fresco/ garden area as we wait for our food to be served. Veritably a stunning eat-out-chill-out hideaway.

No. 9 1 No. 9 3 No. 9 4

The Food

Arroz Con Pollo (410.00php). Wet rice, chicken, pancetta. This  so far is my favorite at No. 9. It’s flavorful and hearty.

No. 9 7

Pork Belly (Price: 420php) with Wild Arugula and salsa verde. Pork belly baked on wood-fire until outer layer turns gold, then topped with a handful of wild rockets and drizzled with salsa verde dressing. I love arugula and this come second on my No. 9 favorites.

No. 9 5

Fideo Negro (Price: 450php). Broken Noodles, squid, chorizo, ink, aioli. Surprised and happy that the dish wasn’t that salty and with the right amount of seafood flavor.

No. 9 6

Morcilla ( 280php). Blood sausage, pickled apples, pumpkin.

No. 9 8

I love No. 9’s Arroz Con Pollo! And it was a first time to have pork belly paired with arugula which I think is a very good idea! Definitely would be coming back to try the other 2 offerings I haven’t sampled yet and their soon to be additions on the menu.

So have you dined at No. 9 already? Share with us your experience! 🙂

Treat yourself to a Mediterranean fling with La Gondola’s expanded menu selection showcasing Mediterranean flavors. La Gondola has been known for serving great Southern European – Mediterranean cuisine like delectable brick-oven baked pizzas and appetizing pastas. Serving mainly Italian, now La Gondola broaden the restaurant’s  Mediterranean zing with North African gusto from the region of Morocco and more southern European zest from Spain and France.

La Gondola Cebu

The Mediterranean feast started with a salad and some appetizers. Shaved Vegetable Salad with Herbs and Vinaigrette is refreshingly light with vertical shaves of cucumber with caballero, clitoria, passionfruit and bouganvilla flowers and baby rockets. If youhave been to Bohol Bee Farm, it would resemble more like the BBF’s Flower Salad. 🙂

Shaved Vegetable Salad with Herbs and Vinaigrette. La Gondola Cebu

I then moved to the next starter. Hummus, Babaganouj and Tahina with warm Moroccan Bread. We are all familiar with hummus ( mashed chickpeas blended with olive oil, tahini, lemon juice, salt and garlic) But what is a Tahina?  Tahina is sesame seeds combined with chickpeas. So hummus is zesty tangy while Tahina is nutty in flavor. Babaganouj is a levantine dish made from eggplant mixed with onions, tomatoes, olive oil and seasoning.

La Gondola Cebu

Calamares is believed to have originated in Spain, but some say it’s from Italy. This Southern European comfort food is widely famous around the world and very much loved by Filipinos.  Calamare  (Spain) or Calamari (Italian), however you say it, it’s no argument that this is one of the world’s favorite appetizers.Below is a photo of  La Gondola’s Fried baby Calamari with fresh tomato salsa.

La Gondola’s Black Paella with Garlic Lemon Sauce. A Valencian dish made with white rice,  mussels, shrimps, baby squid rings made black with cuttlefish/squid ink. And to subtle the “fishy” taste and to avoid the ink to overpower the other seafood components of the dish, garlic and lemon are added.

And for dessert, Chocolate Coulant ala mode! A popular dessert in France, with a toasted outer layer, then soft cake on the inner layer and oozing gooey chocolate on the inside. Choco Lava as we locally call it. 🙂

Herbs are used mostly on Southern European Cuisine while spices intricately flavor North African food. But whichever culinary region Mediterranean food belongs too, vegetables is constitutional ingredient in Mediterranean dishes.

Taking advantage of Cebu’s land and sea’s bounty, La Gondola can recreate limitless  healthy and flavorful Mediterranean dishes. With the dishes I have sampled so far, I would say my fondness for Mediterranean food grew even more. Can’t wait to try La Gondola’s other  Mediterranean offerings!

THE MAPLE BURGER (475php), is a juicy grilled beef patty with American Cheese, lettuce pickles, tomatoes and mapled bacon – sided with onion rings and fries. The juicy patty was made more interesting with the sweet crunch of the mapled bacon.

I was on my usual route to Ayala and as I was driving along F. Cabahug , spotted a new restaurant at the ground floor of Strand Tower. Who would miss that bright orange signage just above the restaurant entrance? Looking at the signage, I had an impression that it’s a coffee shop, but they are actually more than just a place that serves coffee. The interiors of the  cafe are accented in earth colors of brown and green, giving out a very homey feel. Got comfy at the brown foamed couch at one end of the restaurant and browsed on the menu and found some intriguing dishes. I love coffee so much and one really interesting dish that struck me was the Coffee Spare Ribs which I will be trying on my next  TazaPlatito visit. Since my current craving during that time was seafood, I had the house specialty – Shrimp in Salted Egg Butter Sauce.

TazaPlatito Cafe Cebu

Fresh shrimps in a very delicious sauce which surprisingly are good together. Serving comes with a cup of rice. A must try when dining at TazaPlatito! Shrimp in Salted Egg Butter Sauce, 21ophp.

Also tried the Fettuccini and the Barbecue Spareribs. Both dishes reminded me of my grandma’s cooking, a memory that my tastebuds won’t forget! Those moments when a good plate was served and I just kept on scooping in until nothing is left on the plate. ^_^

The Fettuccini was not the creamy kind but the little sauce that sticked on the pasta was flavorful and the crunchy bacon made each pork swirl a delight.

The Barbecue spare ribs was tender and the sauce had a smokey hint. I love how its not sweet which made me enjoy its smokey herby barbecue flavor more.

Parched as I arrived at the restaurant, my Ice Blended Matcha Tea  was consumed  in just four sips. hahaha. Had another round of drink as I wrap up my late lunch, ending the meal with a cup of pure Oslob chocolate with puto. Buurp.

TazaPlatito Cafe is a great place to bond with the family, chill with friends or even a good place for students to study at because the mood is set to be real comfortable. The servers are also very attentive and friendly. And since I’d been really looking forward to try those Coffee Spare Ribs, I might make time this week to go back and nibble on a serving. Are you coming? 😉

These few weeks,Cebu has been busy with gastronomic dawnings. From last week’s Coffee Prince’ opening, we were delighted with the crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside Chocolate Waffle and those cute frappes topped with cotton candy. We also have featured recently the new delectable breakfast offerings at Canvas, perfect to jump start any day of the week.

And just  last August 19, a new kitchen has opened in Salinas Drive and I was lucky enough to get first dibs on the restaurant’s offerings before it opened. The modern- industrial chic look of the restaurant may give you an impression that the things on the menu might be lavishly priced but to my surprise, they’re actually not. Price starts at 140php and my favorite Drunken Angus is reasonably priced at just 370php.

The combination of cement, brick, wood and leather reminded me of a modish home in the county, accented with warm lights, it gives out a very homey feel. A great way to just chill with friends and family over dinner and a great place to impress your date or that special someone with a great meal paired with a serving of wine. 🙂

On the Menu:

Appetizers.

A personal favorite on the list of appetizers at Brique is the Truffled Shoestring Potatoes. Grab a good amount of truffled potatoes, then add some fried basil and  bacon then dip it in the Sriracha mayo, YUM! Truffled Shoestring Potatoes, 250php. Homemade truffle flavored shoestring potatoes with bacon, grated Pecorino and fried basil. Served with sour cream and Sriracha Mayo.

The Spinach Gorgonzola kinda made me crave for a glass of some fruity wine. Cabarnet Franc or Cabarnet Sauvignon anyone? 😉 Spinach Gorgonzola Dip, 175php. Minced spinach served with creamy Italian blue cheese, gorgonzola. Served with a bowl of cubed bread.

Don’t Count Your Calories! And you should definitely not when you order this Halo-halo inspired dessert at Brique. An ube cake with Macapuno and custard cream served with two scoops of ice cream and red beans and corn flakes. (190php)

With the food being prepared fresh as you order, food may take as much as 15-25 minutes to be served. Servers would be giving the customers a heads up about this, but you know when you are hungry right? Waiting is such a pain! So when you are too hungry and couldn’t able to wait for about 15 minutes for your main to be served, then it might be a bad idea to dine here. Or maybe order an appetizer for a quick fix.

Having all that thoughts on food out of my head made me real hungry! And I did loosen my belt after that Brique dinner. Shhh. haha. Overall, the experience at Brique was good. I fell in love with the truffled shoestring potatoes, the Squash and Carrot soup and the Drunken Angus and probably the things I’ll be going back again and again at Brique. 🙂

Looks like La Vie Parissiene isn’t the only one flashing those Cherry Blossom tree lights. This new restaurant in Lahug have ’em too. Lemon Tree Fusion Restaurant’s cuty cute cute ambiance somehow gives you a hint that its a Korean-owned restaurant.

Getting inside the restaurant, there were at least three staff at the waiting area who saw us but did not sit us to a table. So walked to check the al fresco dining area where the cherry blossom trees and the squat dining area are. Since its a bit humid outside, we  chose to sit inside where there’s AC.

If you look closely at the legs of their tables, you’d notice that they are made with sewing machine tables. Really creative! And the small details from books, frames and figures on corners and shelves add an artsy  feel to the resto.

So it says fusion restaurant, but from what we ordered and tasted, we feel that the dishes offered are American, Mexican and Italian offerings but not fusion cuisine.

We started the meal with the free horderves. Diced tomatoes and basil and olive oil on a crispy tortilla. Really good!

Eeeeek. I don’t mean to grose you guys out but there were a few flies flying around during our visit. The service kinda sucked too but fellow foodie Marco Diala did visit them yesterday for lunch and he said that the service was good during their visit, just that when you ask for service water, you have to get it yourself at the water station. 🙂 So am happy that the service did improve since our visit a week ago.

We had the nachos and cheese, baby back ribs and surf and turf for dinner.

Nachos with ground beef with mozzarella and cream with bacon, ground beef and bell pepper dip on a sizzling plate. A good tasting appetizer, but our dip started to harden a few minutes after it has been served.

Lemon Tree Fusion Restaurant

Surf and Turf. The turf refers to the steak and the  ‘surf’ which is  the seafood element on the dish are two small shrimps in mayo sauce. The angus beef was tender, milky and juicy, really satisfying. A dash of freshly ground pepper would make it even better. The mixed veggies came fresh from the freezer and its like it has been there for a long time. See how the beans are all wrinkly already? and it kinda started to have that sticky feel like its going to go bad the next day.

Surf and Turf

Tender Prime Ribs with sweet smokey sauce, yum! Just a little pricey.

Baby Back Ribs

Tried just a few of their offerings and I’m looking forward to trying out more offerings from Lemon Tree Fusion Restaurant. When it’s a bit cooler, I’d like to dine at the al fresco area, under the stars and those lighted cherry blossoms. 🙂

I was feeling a bit homesick after two weeks of vacationing, and dining at a new resto here in the metro would be the right way to welcome me back. It was a random dinner with my blogger friends Marco, Jeemah and Atty. Ethelbert and we had been talking about visiting this new rib place and twas about time we did.

Ribpublic is located at the road behind Coco Mall and is on your left when driving along the one way street. We tried 4 of 6 offerings on the menu. The Ribpublic, Wild West Wings, Space Shrimps and Pop! Fish and Chips.

Attentive and friendly staff is  always a plus to any restaurant and Ribpublic didn’t fall short in this area, smiling waiter and cashier just set the mood that its going to be a good dinner. 🙂

We started the meal with Ribpublic’s Pop! Fish and Chips (138php). 3 battered fish fillet with fries on the side and tartar sauce. I personally find both the fries and fish too oily than the usual. The fish could use a bit of a lemon slice and pepper to taste too.

Ripbulic Cebu

Ripbulic Cebu

Butter Garlic Space Shrimps (168php). The serving came with 12 pieces of shrimps in butter and garlic. Tasted good but this should not be served on wax paper, for the paper tends to soften as the oil sips in, and bits of wax paper mix with the butter oil as you scoop in.

Ribpublic Cebu

Ribpublic Cebu

Buffalo Wild West Wing (158php). This one would be my favorite at Ribpublic. 6 pieces of chicken wings with chili sweet sauce. Warning, at first bite, the spice might be a bit strong, but fades away very quickly and mellows down to sweetness. Also available in garlic parmesan.

Ribpublic Cebu

Ribpublic Cebu

And finally, The Ribpublic (188.00ph)! Smoky sweet ribs with rice and corn kernels on the side. Though its not the ‘meat falls off the rib’ kind, its serving size would give you a big burp. And  the smoky sweet flavor didn’t get through the the inside layer of the meat, so better ask for extra sauce.

Ribpublic Cebu

Ribpublic Cebu

Another thing I’ve noticed is that Ribpublic had chairs and tables set up on the sidewalk. I hope they can take it out, and let the sidewalk be used as a sidewalk. Plus it is a bit appalling, for the stench from the drainage can be smelled when seated at the sidewalk set up.

But I love the chalk art and the space mural inside the resto! And they have a clean restroom too!  <3

Can’t wait to try their garlic parmesan Wild West Wings and Sweet and Spicy Shrimps. ‘Til we meet again Ribpublic. ^_^

Charmed by this beautiful place, I prepared myself for a hearty fare by one of my favorite chefs, Steve Shrimski. If you love Canvas’ Australian/International chows , then you should try Steve’s take on International food with a Filipino twist. I knew from the start that this night will be a burpy one.

The feast started with the complimentary appetizer, mushroom duxelle canape – bread topped with cheesy chopped mushroom. The melted cheese complimented well with the soft mushroom, giving it a subtle cheesy salty flavor.

Circa 1900 Cebu

Then from the appetizers menu, we had  the Double dipping and the Asian Pancake Rolls.  The Double Dipping (245php) is served with bread, croutons and wafers with Blue cheese and bacon & Sour Cream dip and roast black olive tapenade with truffle oil dip. Asian Pancake Rolls (175php), slow braised orange duck wrapped in Chinese pancake with mini beancurd fries.

And then came the salad. Roast pumpkin and olives with grilled dukkah chicken with spinach, fetta in red balsamic vinaigrette dressing. (265php) I love how the chicken is rolled in dukkah, giving it a crunchy texture and nutty notes.

Since I am on a lent sacrifice, I won’t be eating pork and beef until the end of lent. So I tried two dishes from the list of  main entrées, a fish and chicken course.

Grouper Fillet, 535php. Egg battered grouper fillet with ripe mango, noodle salad in asian dressing. The mangoes gave a summery sweet hint to the fillet, yum!

Chciken Bringhe, tumeric and vegetable paella with coconut and raisins, topped with sauté chicken and sprouts, 275php. This one would be on my list of Circa favorites. I haven’t tasted Pampanga’s versionpf Bringhe yet, but I thought having the paella cake’s top toasted was genius! It gave a natural light smokey flavor to the milky, semi sweet paella cake. The chicken was tender and flavorful too.

Both bestsellers, Char-grilled Beef tenderloin and Crunchy Pork belly were also served. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to taste it because of my sacrifice for lent. But it did smell great! And seeing my friends Mark and Kristine’s reaction as they were chowing down on these entrées , it must be really good. 🙂

Desserts! No matter how much we eat,  we always make sure to leave some room for dessert. We had Maja Blanca Cheesecake (135php), Banana coconut cake with malunggay ice cream (125php), pumpkin pie with caramel poached banana(95php).

I enjoyed how light the pumpkin pie was that it seemed like it melted in your mouth. And the malunggay ice cream was a surprise as well – with that wasabi kick in the end, it made me scoop again and again.

Delice Recipe

Delice Recipe

So it’s 3AM and I just finished packing for a trip to Shanghai later and can’t seem to doze off so I turned on my computer and blog about a series of unfortunate events turned awesome that happened earlier. Out of 6 things I was suppose to accomplish earlier, only half were completed. One important thing I didn’t get to do is get some Chinese moolah, which I was told by the very friendly people at the Southwinds Travel Agency to acquire before leaving (hello there Ms. Cookie ^_^) . Two of the money changers I went to had no Yuans, so decided to get dinner first and drop by Ayala to try my luck.

My friends Marco and Atty. Ethy had originally planned that we go to this two-week old Busay restaurant last Tuesday but everyone got tangled with work and all, so ’twas postponed this coming weekend. But since I will not be here this weekend and got some time to kill, headed to Busay and tried  Delice Recipes offerings.

The road  going up to Delice  was really  dark at that moment and was relieved as my car’s head lights caught the sign “Delice Parking Area.” I immediately made a right and parked. It was  just a yellow light across the street that seemed to give brightness in the area. Then Delice’s waiter walked towards me, informed me that there’s a power outage. “But there’s food right?,” I inquired hungrily. haha. And was glad when he replied, “Yes sir, we have!” Well, I took an effort of driving up to Busay so I better try the restaurant’s offerings out.

All the waiters and waitresses were accommodating and welcoming.I was then escorted to my table and seated at the porch where I get to see a stunning view of Cebu lighted up for the night. And then it started to drizzle! Haha! And so I transferred to a table inside, near the bar.

The al fresco area/porch seats around 20, with  5  square tables (seats 4 each). And the function area has 2 long tables,  seating a total of 20 people. Then the bar area has several tables as well, and a staircase to the bed and breakfast rooms.

Delice Recipe- Asian Salad

Delice Recipe- Asian Salad

Ordered the Asian Salad and Chicken Parmigiana. Asian Salad (Price 260php). Mixed Greens, shredded carrots, sesame seeds, kani and nori in Asian dressing. Though I expected the asian dressing to be either a bit tangy or having a hint of sesame oil taste, but just  got a whiff of  sweet vinegar. The sesame seeds gave it a nutty taste and texture which I liked. The Chicken Parmigiana, 280php,  breaded chicken fillet with parmesan cheese, with the special Delice tomato sauce, topped with a blend of gruyere, cheddar and mozzarella cheese. It reminded me of  a four cheese pizza but with breaded chicken as the crust in a bed of garlic rice. Yum!

Buuurp! I enjoyed the Chicken Parmigiana and would  definitely go back to try out other stuff on the menu when I get back. And I promise to post some restaurant photos on our next visit.

Well, I wasn’t able to get my money changed to  Yuans in Ayala, but found out that had some 100++ Yuans left from my last trip to Shenzhen. I guess I’ll  have to get the rest of the Chinese tender I need when in Shanghai. Wish me a safe trip and hope you enjoyed reading this post! 😉

UPDATE: March 30, 2014

Right after being treated like a royal at Cafe Tiala, I picked up my my blogger friends Marco and Jem at Asiatown IT Park and went joy riding to Busay which ended up with a carbo and sugar loading pre-dinner at Delice. As promised , I’d be back and post more photos  of Delice Recipes. Here’s the update! 🙂

Ordered the Pancake Set and Quattros Leches in a jar this time. The pancake set came with two thick, three strips of bacon, 2 sunny side ups, sided with jam and butter-tasting margarine. Thought the pancakes were too thick, that it was a bit dry on the inside. But the Quattros Leches we enjoyed so much. It was soft, rightfully sweet and creamy!

We suggest you go there at around 5PM and enjoy how the sky turns from sunshiny blue to dramatic rays of orange. Then at night, be stunned by the relaxing view of the city lights.

After undergoing the Juicyfied 3 day detox program , I am on a hunt for light yet  gratifying meals to stay on track. Satisfied with the results, I plan to eat a bit healthy, well just a bit. hehe. Have been seeing some of my friends posting photos of this new creperie in Capitol Area on instagram and I just have to check it out for myself.

A mini replica of the Eiffel Tower  greets you just before you reach the restaurant’s glass door, which by the way, lights up during the night. The cozy restaurant seats about 30 people. Framed images of Paris are hanged on the walls , select choices of wine on the shelves, big and thick wooden furnitures add up to charm of the restaurant.

So here’s what I have tried so far.

1. La Cebuana (125php), sweet crepe with slices of sweet Cebu Mangoes drizzled with dark chocolate (or nutella)

2. La poulet-creme (165php), salted crepe made with buckwheat flour with chicken and onions in white cream.

3. La glace Caramel (135php),  sweet crepe with Vanilla Ice Cream, salted caramel and toasted almonds.

The sweet crepes are yellow with pale gold in color. Thin yet moist, it is cooked perfectly. The recommended toppings compliment well with the crepe and with just the right amount. I could use more of the roasted almonds on my La Glace Caramel though. 🙂

The salted crepe is brown and lacy but is moist and soft. The chicken is tender, the white onion gives a sweet kick to the crepe and the white cream made the chicken and the onion compliment each other yielding to one light satisfying meal. The espresso comes with a Creperie paris cookie.

And with the good crepes served in this restaurant, you’d wonder who made ’em. If you peep at the kitchen’s glass window, you’d see a French guy making the crepe!

When I get so stressed out, I got 3 places in mind to go and unwind- the beach, the mountain or ice cream/FroYo parlor. And gladly all 3 are just a few minute drive from anywhere in Cebu City.  4PM, with good friends Nickolai and Remz, we drove up the mountain of Balamban to have dinner. The drive particularly reminded me of a bus ride to Genting (Malaysia) with my brother Edd and backpacking friends Geof and Ken 4 years ago, where the fog literally covered the street and all we can see is the yellow line separating the lanes. This is not  normal by the way, the habagat caused a decrease in temperature, making it way colder, hence too much fog.

The extremely foggy condition took us an hour to get to West 35,  which normally is a 30- 45 minute drive  from Lahug Cebu. West 35 is an Eco Mountain retreat where you can enjoy a great view of Balamban Mointains, have your kids play around the playground, ride the zipline, trek to Gaas Waterfalls or enjoy a good lunch or dinner at Haven Cafe.

Due to the bad weather that day, Haven Cafe closes at 6PM and gladly, we made it just in time. I was starving so I ordered for myself one of Haven Cafe’s specialty dish “Grilled Boneless Chicken” and hawaiian pizza for the 3 of us to share. The food took around 25-30 minutes to prepare so we had time to look around and chill at the viewing deck.

Haven Cafe is a great cozy place to chill even the weather was a bit gloomy, it was a good place to talk and catch up with friends. And check out the view from my restroom photo, that’s how foggy it was that time. And since the Balamban mountains wasn’t visible from the viewing deck, we opted to take a photo of ourselves instead. hahaha. And yes it was pretty cold and you’d see how pale we were on the photo. 😛

Haven Cafe is so off the beaten path that you just can’t help but expect the food to be superb. So as I mentioned earlier, I had the “Grilled Boneless Chicken” which as per the waitress is one of their specialty dishes and the Hawaiian Pizza for us to share.

Grilled Boneless Chicken, 210php. 2 chicken breast fillet with creamy pesto sauce, 210php. The chicken fillet , I think it was missing a dash of pepper or marinade to make the meat tastier. The chicken tasted like it was defrosted, rubbed with salt and then grilled. The creamy pesto sauce gave a bit of light to the grilled chicken though.

Hawaiian Pizza, 325php. Sliced ham, pineapple chunks, mozzarella cheese, pomodoro, olive oil and onions. It could’ve been perfect if the crust was crispier.

Haven Cafe has 2 specialty drinks, Westy Minty Lemonade and Cucumber Quencher, both at 155php a pitcher/55php a glass. We ordered the Westy-Minty Lemonade for it was highly recommended by our waitress. Lemonade flavored juice with ginger extract and mint leaves. Refreshing!

Well, the food didn’t meet my expectations, but it was an awesome experience nonetheless. I have to commend the friendly waitresses for a wonderful service. I’ll be back real soon to try some of the other food offerings and next time, I’ll be there on a sunny day. 🙂 See you again real soon Haven Cafe!
