Just recently, Rico’s Lechon opened its second dining restaurant in the metro. Located just a few minutes away (about 10 minutes) from Mactan-Cebu International Airport, it is the perfect dining stopover the moment you arrive in Cebu, and an excellent “pasalubong”  destination to bring a piece of Cebu to your friends and families back home. And yes, Rico’s Lechon is thoughtful enough to offer the easy-to-carry take-away boxes so you can hand carry your pasalubong with ease and comfort.

Rico’s Lechon Mactan branch seats about 160 customers a time , set in a two-level 107 square meter dining area. The interiors are done by Shiela Solon with a concept that emanates a hispanic garden hacienda – with the patterned tiles , wood tones and wall grills with floral accents. The second floor dining can be converted to a function area for birthdays and celebrations.

Aside from everyone’s favorite spicy roasted pig, Rico’s Lechon Mactan branch now offers a wide array of food selections – from Cebuano favorites like Kalderetang Kanding, Trio of Seaweed Salad and Kinamatisang Buwad to Filipino and Western choices.

Salinas Restaurant Cebu

An interesting spin on our local favorites, the newly opened Salinas Restaurant will surprise you with exciting weave of flavors. The impressive twist gives a refreshing perspective to our cherished Filipino recipes.

We are used to having all ingredients already offered on our bowl of pochero soup, but Salinas Restaurant serves the soup and the bone marrow separately. You can either scoop out the marrow and have it on your soup, or try it with the bread and caramelized onion. Either way, it’s sinfully satisfying! haha  That’s just one example of how Salinas makes Filipino dining interesting.

Pocherong Katag

Pocherong Katag

Also, am a big fan of Salinas’ Bloodless Dinuguan. Yes, you read it right – it’s bloodless; and vegetarian too! It’s made of tofu and Lazy Chef’s secret sauce. A must-try as well! This dish is in collaboration with the Lazy Chef and is one of seven dishes on the vegetarian menu.

And seriously in love with their chocolate taho! I love the blend of the delicious lightly flavored pudding with the sago and the muscovado syrup!

Chilled Taho

With a new food concept also comes a brand-new dining atmosphere. Salinas Restaurant has a fresh vibe that’s close to a modern country home, but still with the feels of Cebuano warmness and hospitality; same neighborly warmth we are accustomed to when dining at any Golden Cowrie or  Hukad restaurants. 😉

It was 6PM and might be a bit too early for alcohol, but the “beeritas” was extremely tempting and thought it was just the right antidote for the heat spell we are are currently experiencing. These colorful and playful drinks are specially concocted by the newest restaurant and bar in Mango area – ‘N Door Lounge! These delectable beauties will debut during their soft opening tomorrow, May 22, 2015.

N Door Lounge 6

A great drink would even be much awesome paired with some munchies, and gladly found a perfect match for these beeritas! By the way, beeritas is a hybrid drink with your favorite margarita and a serving of beer in one single dose. Clever huh? So talking about a perfect match, ‘N Door Lounge’s Bulgogi Nacho is great with any of the beeritas. Nachos with minced bulgogi, jalapeño, tomato, onions with cheese, sour cream and hot sauces. Every bite on the nachos you get to taste the sweet light chili flavors of the Mexican jalapeños and sauces with sweet minced Korean bulgogi which was in total harmony. Seriously good with the beeritas!

N Door Lounge 2

And another interesting flavor fusion is ‘N Door  Lounge Kimchi Fries. Everyone’s favorite just got an intriguing twist. It’s French fries topped with minced bulgogi, kimchi, onions, tomato, jalapeño with cheesem sour cream and hot sauces. Yum!

When grilled squid comes out as a topic, Gerry’s Grill would be the first thing that pops in my mind. Those tender squid strips smooched with Gerry’s signature sauce is the best! And to delight its Mandaue patrons is its newly opened 65th store in A.S. Fortuna.

Fiesta Bay Seafood Restaurant Mactan

Fiesta Bay Seafood Restaurant Mactan

We Filipinos love fiestas! It is an occasion where food brings everyone together under one roof. Chef June Fernandez  (one of my favorite culinary visionaries in Cebu) of Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa made mention of this new restaurant just along the resort belt and recently paid the restaurant a visit to check out what they have to offer.

Arrived at 5:00PM just before they open their doors at 5:30PM, we were 30 minutes too early for dinner but the friendly staff welcomed us with warm greetings and did accommodate my friends and I nonetheless. If the hospitable servers don’t give you that fiesta feel yet, then the colorful center ceiling at the main dining area and the banderitas would surely do. The warm lights make you feel like you are right at home. Fiesta Bay exudes a genuine Filipino hospitality in a modern and stylish festive scene.

Along the resort belt, it was a surprise that the items here aren’t lavishly priced. Per serving prices are the same as casual dining restaurants in the metro which range from 110php-350php for the mains.

The Bulalo which was brothed for hours gives a natural beefy soup sweetened by the corn  and radiating  layers of flavors from the beef , the vegetables and other ingredients. And you’d dote on the fall- off- the- bone tender beef.  Different from other Bulalos I’ve tried, Fiesta Bay’s version is not too salty and less oily, for the excess oil was scooped out during the cooking process. So when your done sipping on your Bulalo soup, you’d not feel like you smooched on a bar of butter.

Fiesta Bay 4 Fiesta 4

Fried grouper in Mango Salsa on fried sotanghon is another interesting dish on the menu. Strips of tender fried filleted grouper in a summery sweet mango with fresh green and red bell peppers salsa that’s just perfect together.

Fiesta Bay 5

Fresh lobster in lemon garlic butter sauce! The creamy lobster meat was superb by itself  but the lemon garlic butter made it even more impeccable.

Fiesta Bay 7

Singapore Chili Crab. For those who love it sweet and spicy, this would be a great dish to revel on. Fresh crab already precracked when served so you’d not worry to get all messy and instead enjoy the dish.

And the Singaporean Salted Egg Crab is another dish that would definitely make me miss dining at Fiesta Bay! The Salted egg cream gives more flavor to the fresh crab meat. Yum!

TIP: The fried buns are even more delicious when dipped in either the Singaporean Chili Crab Sauce or the Salted Egg Sauce.  <3

Fiesta Bay 13

All time favorite Adobo rice! With bits of fried crunchy pork meat, each spoonful of adobo rice is a delight!

Fiesta Bay 8

Always leave some room for dessert! Filipino favorites Guinomis and Bukayo Bunuelos to end the feast.

Fiesta Bay 9 Fiesta Bay 10

Drinks? I recommend the refreshing house drink Citrica!

Great service, distinctly appetizing dishes, homey festive ambiance (not to mention an awesome song playlist) and with a reasonable priced menu, Fiesta Bay Seafood Restaurant is definitely on my list of favorite restaurants in the metro and I bet will soon be in yours! 🙂

Can’t wait to be back!

I was on my usual route to Ayala and as I was driving along F. Cabahug , spotted a new restaurant at the ground floor of Strand Tower. Who would miss that bright orange signage just above the restaurant entrance? Looking at the signage, I had an impression that it’s a coffee shop, but they are actually more than just a place that serves coffee. The interiors of the  cafe are accented in earth colors of brown and green, giving out a very homey feel. Got comfy at the brown foamed couch at one end of the restaurant and browsed on the menu and found some intriguing dishes. I love coffee so much and one really interesting dish that struck me was the Coffee Spare Ribs which I will be trying on my next  TazaPlatito visit. Since my current craving during that time was seafood, I had the house specialty – Shrimp in Salted Egg Butter Sauce.

TazaPlatito Cafe Cebu

Fresh shrimps in a very delicious sauce which surprisingly are good together. Serving comes with a cup of rice. A must try when dining at TazaPlatito! Shrimp in Salted Egg Butter Sauce, 21ophp.

Also tried the Fettuccini and the Barbecue Spareribs. Both dishes reminded me of my grandma’s cooking, a memory that my tastebuds won’t forget! Those moments when a good plate was served and I just kept on scooping in until nothing is left on the plate. ^_^

The Fettuccini was not the creamy kind but the little sauce that sticked on the pasta was flavorful and the crunchy bacon made each pork swirl a delight.

The Barbecue spare ribs was tender and the sauce had a smokey hint. I love how its not sweet which made me enjoy its smokey herby barbecue flavor more.

Parched as I arrived at the restaurant, my Ice Blended Matcha Tea  was consumed  in just four sips. hahaha. Had another round of drink as I wrap up my late lunch, ending the meal with a cup of pure Oslob chocolate with puto. Buurp.

TazaPlatito Cafe is a great place to bond with the family, chill with friends or even a good place for students to study at because the mood is set to be real comfortable. The servers are also very attentive and friendly. And since I’d been really looking forward to try those Coffee Spare Ribs, I might make time this week to go back and nibble on a serving. Are you coming? 😉

Carcar Lechon Directory

Cebu is home to the best swine roast houses there is in the country. CnT, Rico’s, Ayers and Zubuchon lead the commercial lechon cult in Cebu City. Talisay and Lapu-lapu too have several lechon houses that serve super tasty roasted pigs. But each of these lechon houses have their distinct flavor and taste. And Carcar is one of the cities in Cebu that has a unique lechon recipe that has been loved by many Cebuanos and tourists – roasted pig made more flavorful with pig broth and roasted pig drippings.

Lechon vendors are lined up inside Carcar Public Market. Since the lechon are available only for take-away, you can dine in at one of the carenderias situated rearward of the lechon vendors. Just buy rice and drinks from the carenderia and get your appetite ready for the feast! Buy a kilo for just 300php and share it with 3 of your friends!

Carcar Lechon

Carcar Lechon

iLearners Inc. has been doing outreaches for almost 7 years now in the mountain areas of Carcar. And we make it a point to celebrate after each successful charity by eating lechon in Carcar city center. With 3 major outreaches a year in Carcar, we have tried all the lechon lined up in the market several times already. All are appetizing and tasty, but we have this one favorite, GUILING’s SPECIAL LECHON!

Guiling’s Special Lechon is a recipe by their Papa Cinto passed on to the present lechon roasters of their house. Even without the broth and drippings, the meat itself is already very delicious. Imagine crispy golden red skin, with a thin layer of fat and flavorful tender meat. Yum! And the lechon is even  tastier with the broth and pig drippings!

Can’t wait to go back real soon!

Tip: If you are planning to bring lechon back to the metro, be sure to have the broth be separated from the lechon to mke sure it doesn’t go bad.

With the largest selection of “fresh” and “live” seafood in Cebu, Isla Sugbo Seafood City Restaurant, will soon be a favorite dining spot for many seafood lovers. Just as you step inside the lobby of the newly renovated Cebu Grand Convention, look to your right, and the restaurant’s beautifully wood paneled wall facade would draw you in. With the wooden floors and walls and candle lamps, the restaurant exudes a comfy  and warm seaport ambiance. The aqua blue and gray seats and the framed wall paintings  add up to the wharf-ish  atmosphere. The month old, Isla Sugbu Seafood City accommodates around 300 guests at a time.

My first time at Isla Sugbu Seafood City, I get to try three dishes from the menu: Fried Blue Crabs with Garlic, Sole Fish with Garlic Lemon Butter and the grilled squid in Coco Curry Cream.

Fried Blue Crab with Garlic. The blue crabs’ frying process made the shell softer, making it easier to bite on the claws, and enjoying the tender, fresh meat of the crab. And throw in a pinch of the fried garlic in your mouth for more flavor.

Sole Fish with Garlic Lemon & Butter. Sweet and buttery with hints of lemon and garlic and a crunch on the edges, this dish will surely be loved by many.

Sole Dish with Garlic Lemon & Butter- Seafood City

Grilled Squid in Coco Curry Cream. When we grill squid, the meat toughens and gets really gummy, but with the bed of coco curry cream, it gives more flavor and moist to the dry squid meat. And the balance of flavor between the coco and curry is really delicious. So far my favorite dish in this restaurant.

And for dessert, Lychee Pana Cotta. Digging in with a spoonful at first, you’d notice the texture is different from a regular italian flan. It’s not smooth and creamy, but a bit coarse. As I scooped my second spoonful, noticed tidbits of lychee and refined sugar.

Overall, I loved the restaurant’s ambiance, service was excellent and food was good! Considering they serve live and fresh seafood, the pricing’s  really reasonable. I would definitely consider dining here again. 🙂

When I get so stressed out, I got 3 places in mind to go and unwind- the beach, the mountain or ice cream/FroYo parlor. And gladly all 3 are just a few minute drive from anywhere in Cebu City.  4PM, with good friends Nickolai and Remz, we drove up the mountain of Balamban to have dinner. The drive particularly reminded me of a bus ride to Genting (Malaysia) with my brother Edd and backpacking friends Geof and Ken 4 years ago, where the fog literally covered the street and all we can see is the yellow line separating the lanes. This is not  normal by the way, the habagat caused a decrease in temperature, making it way colder, hence too much fog.

The extremely foggy condition took us an hour to get to West 35,  which normally is a 30- 45 minute drive  from Lahug Cebu. West 35 is an Eco Mountain retreat where you can enjoy a great view of Balamban Mointains, have your kids play around the playground, ride the zipline, trek to Gaas Waterfalls or enjoy a good lunch or dinner at Haven Cafe.

West 35

Due to the bad weather that day, Haven Cafe closes at 6PM and gladly, we made it just in time. I was starving so I ordered for myself one of Haven Cafe’s specialty dish “Grilled Boneless Chicken” and hawaiian pizza for the 3 of us to share. The food took around 25-30 minutes to prepare so we had time to look around and chill at the viewing deck.

Haven Cafe atWest 35

Haven Cafe is a great cozy place to chill even the weather was a bit gloomy, it was a good place to talk and catch up with friends. And check out the view from my restroom photo, that’s how foggy it was that time. And since the Balamban mountains wasn’t visible from the viewing deck, we opted to take a photo of ourselves instead. hahaha. And yes it was pretty cold and you’d see how pale we were on the photo. 😛

Haven Cafe is so off the beaten path that you just can’t help but expect the food to be superb. So as I mentioned earlier, I had the “Grilled Boneless Chicken” which as per the waitress is one of their specialty dishes and the Hawaiian Pizza for us to share.

Grilled Boneless Chicken, 210php. 2 chicken breast fillet with creamy pesto sauce, 210php. The chicken fillet , I think it was missing a dash of pepper or marinade to make the meat tastier. The chicken tasted like it was defrosted, rubbed with salt and then grilled. The creamy pesto sauce gave a bit of light to the grilled chicken though.

Hawaiian Pizza, 325php. Sliced ham, pineapple chunks, mozzarella cheese, pomodoro, olive oil and onions. It could’ve been perfect if the crust was crispier.

Haven Cafe has 2 specialty drinks, Westy Minty Lemonade and Cucumber Quencher, both at 155php a pitcher/55php a glass. We ordered the Westy-Minty Lemonade for it was highly recommended by our waitress. Lemonade flavored juice with ginger extract and mint leaves. Refreshing!

Well, the food didn’t meet my expectations, but it was an awesome experience nonetheless. I have to commend the friendly waitresses for a wonderful service. I’ll be back real soon to try some of the other food offerings and next time, I’ll be there on a sunny day. 🙂 See you again real soon Haven Cafe!

Started with cooking for his friends on gatherings, Alduz Aizon or Duz to his friends wanted to share his cooking with the rest of the Cebuanos. He begun welcoming customers in November 2012 at their address in San Antonio Village and had been getting good reviews from diners.

With no restaurant signage outside, it may seem unwelcoming but wait ’til you get inside and meet the people. 🙂 Too late for lunch and too early for dinner, we arrived at Duz Grill at 4PM with the property’s blue gate still closed, which was then opened a few minutes after and we were greeted with a smile. 🙂

Duz Grill

Duz Grill

The al fresco area can sit around 30-35 customers  and the indoor dining around 15-25. The outdoor dining area is romantically set in the garden which gets more charming when warm lights lit up at night. And an air conditioned dining area is available inside Alduz’ house  and the owners themselves make you feel like you are a family friend being invited for dinner. We chose to sit inside the ‘entertainment room’ under the branches of the heart tree. Hahaha, okay it’s really not called the heart tree but with the capiz hearts hanging around it’s branches, it’s just appropriate to call it the heart tree, right? 🙂 And yeah, when you step on the front door of the house, try looking up and see how they turned some old wood into light decors. Pretty cool!

In every restaurant you like, there’s always this one thing that will keep you coming back again and again, and at Yakski, it’s the sauce! ^_^

The place is clean and it seems that the owners are so into cleanliness even the waiters have this Lady Gaga-ish mouth cover (which I thought was a microphone at first ’til i asked) to prevent any saliva going into your food. teehee. The food prices? Very competitive, almost the same prices as with the famous Larsian Barbecue Station.

For this visit I get to sample the small sized barbecue (7php), big sized barbecue (15php), chorizo (15php) and quarter chicken (65php). Bestsellers are tuna panga and tuna belly which I would definitely be trying on our next visit.

Yakski Barbecue

Yakski Barbecue

Was impressed on how clean the place is and how the prices are so reasonable. And the best part is that you would not smell like barbecue after your lunch or dinner. Yakski is now on my list of  fave grill houses in Cebu. <3

Cebu is home to the country’s best lechon – would you agree? 🙂 I remember a poll iLuvCebu did last November 2011 about the Top 5 Best Lechon in Cebu and looking back now after a year and 3 months, there had been so many new lechon houses emerging, and most of them had been receiving good feedback from both the locals and tourists. Tatang’s Extra Crispy Boneless Lechon is one of those lechon places that’s making every lechon lover gaga! Just look at that extra crispy skin, the thin layer of fat and the tasty meat, yum!

When dining at either Lantaw Floating restaurant Cordova or Lantaw Native Restaurant Busay, be sure to call and reserve a table to prevent waiting in line for an hour or two. And be there on time before your table reservation is given to other customers waiting in line. 🙂

We took note of what we love at Lantaw Floating Restaurant in Cordova and gladly the taste are the same. Too bad they don’t serve the Gambas we so loved anymore.

My brothers and I had dubbed this the best Kare-kare we had. Lantaw’s Crispy Pata Kare-kare’s sauce have a balance taste of nuttiness and sweetness that did not over power the taste of every veggie on the pot and the pata itslef. Though the pata  we had during this dinner was not crispy and the slices were tiny unlike what we had before at their branch in Cordova. (Price 150php)

Ginataang Monggo would be another favorite. Price 120php.

It may be very far from the city of Cebu but Lantaw Floating Restaurant manages to mesmerize customers to dine at this seaside restaurant. What’s awesomely impressive about Lantaw Floating Restaurant is that  it delivers classic native cuisine and infuses some Cordova flavor in its dishes.

Here are some of our Lantaw Floating Restaurant Favorites:

Lantaw Floating Restaurant puts a twist on the gambas dish by putting in mango puree giving it a mango sweet taste which fades as you chew away the shrimp. (Price 120php)

Lantaw Floating Restaurant’s Sizzling Gambas

Cordova Express is Lantaw’s rendition of Bicol Express. Mildly spicy, smooth and interestingly with shreds of coconut meat. (Price 145php)

Our family loves Kare kare and Lantaw’s Kare Kare na pata was unanimously our favorite here. Its mildly sweet and the peanut butter sauce is not overpowering. (Price 150php)

Ginataang Munggo is a classic. (Price: 120php)

Lantaw Floating Restaurant’s Monggo

Banana Turon (110php). Turon with nangka sided with ice cream.

Bibingka Cake Ala Mode (70php).  This would be my favorite dessert in the restaurant. Yum!

Yes it’s Wednesday cheat day again and iLuvCebu team is excited to share our latest discovery to everyone – BUDDIES!  The restaurant is really hard to miss for once you enter the arcade, Piazza Elesia, it’s the first store on your right. 🙂 And parking? Not a problem!

Buddies

Buddies  just opened  on the 1st of May this year, had been creating a bit of a buzz online for it’s juicy flavorful patties! The toned down diner ambiance with a clean and crisp red highlights and wooden furnishings would give it away, that Buddies is not a fast-food restaurant. Your burgers, burritos and everything else on the menu (except for the drinks of course) are prepared just right after you order so give them around 8 to 15 minutes to prepare, but waiting is all worth it when you get to try the good stuff served here at Buddies! Everyone who were able to dine in at the 2 month old cafe now knows how delectably good their burgers are but do they know why the cafe is named , “Buddies“?

Ok, once upon a time, John Paul was lost in a forest far far away and started looking for a way out of the forest before darkness fall. As he was looking he saw a young fellow playing poker under a tree named Blake. He then joined Blake playing poker and as dinner comes to a near, they both fell hungry and started looking for something to eat. As they stroll around the forest they sniffed a stupendous essence of smoke and followed it. And there, insight is Nino making burgers! And from then on they became good friends enjoying burgers, burritos, tacos and many more over poker for many many years. And after so long, they were able to get out of the forest far far away, they decided to open up a restaurant which they called , “BUDDIES!” teehee.

Okay okay, that’s me and my imagination running on overdrive. But yes, it’s named Buddies because the restaurant is owned by 3 long time buddies Nino Bascon, John Paul Chiongbian and Blake Go. Buddies Nino, John Paul and Blake decided to share with the rest of Cebu, or maybe the world, what Nino has been preparing for them and their friends over the years – hence the diner “Buddies” was opened!

It’s dinner time and let’s give you a quick rundown on what we ordered. We had chili Cheese fries, onion rings, Carnitas Taco, Philly Cheese Steak , Buddy Burger with chili con carne and cheese, Carnitas Burrito, Sizzling Burger Steak and Fried Chicken, wheeew!  Okay hold those thoughts, just to remind you guys, we were 5 who partook dinner, not to be defensive and all, just want to make it clear. hehe 😉

Buddies' Chili Cheese Fries (85php)

I love fries! Well, who doesn’t! And you would love it more with chili con carne and cheese like how Ron and Rufus eat their  fries like a boss! (Ron’s Kim Possible’s sidekick and rufus is the naked mole rat, in case you don’t know ’em ;)).

Buddies Onion Rings (45php)

Crispy coating and tender sweet onion inside! For onion ring fans, this you would enjoy! Reminds me of my friend Neil Matillano from Singapore who loves onion rings! See you soon buddy and try Buddies when you visit Cebu!

Buddies Carnitas Taco (120php)

Buddies’ Carnitas Taco or pork taco would be a different taco from what we Cebuanos have been accustomed to. Most restaurants here would serve tacos on a hard shell but here at Buddies they serve it on a soft flour tortilla with meat onions, tomato and cilantro. Yum!

Buddy Burgers (89php ++ for extra toppings)

Buddies has one of the best burgers in town!  Each of the members of iLuvCebu team would synonymously agree! Juicy and flavorful patty! Would try the Big Buddy Burger (triple burger) or maybe do the Ultimate Burger Challenge and see how many minutes would I be able to finish the Ultimate Buddy Burger! hahahaha

Carnitas Burrito (135php)

Carnitas Burrito – Flour Tortilla with meat, onions, tomato, beans, salsa rice and cilantro.

Philly Cheesesteak (150php)

One of my favorites at Buddies – The Philly Cheesesteak. Thin steak slices with cheese and caramelized onions on a hoagie bun.

Buddies' Fried Chicken (85php)

Fried Chicken. The kids would love these! Crispy on the outside, flavorful on the inside. You can opt to get a gravy or the interesting sweet soy sauce mixture.

Buddies Burger Steak

My brothers and I love burger steaks! And Buddies’ Burger steak is just Ti amo! We highly recommend the Burger Steak! Order the 2 piece for one wouldn’t be enough!

And for anyone who think they can consume a quadruple patty burger in 5 minutes or less, then come and join the Buddies’ Ultimate Burger Challenge! If you get to do so, get the Ultimate Burger for free and the Buddies’ Conqueror Shirt! Good luck to all burger warriors! Until our next piggin out sessions guys, join us again next week! Let’s all pig out and be merry!

It’s a Wednesday and it’s our pig out day!  Let me just walk you through on some of the Lobby Lounge’s sumptuous offerings that we had during our  dinner.

We started the meal with soups. We had cream of mushroom soup and tomato soup. Cream of Mushroom soup is light cream of mushroom served with sauteed shitake mushroom fillet, truffle oil and garlic bread. Tomato soup is made from roasted tomato soup served with fresh cream and pesto crostini.

Lobby Lounge's Soups - Tomato Soup

Lobby Lounge’s Gambas Al Jillo would be one of my recommendations! The shrimps are tender and with the right amount of spice and chili to tickle the palate.

Lobby Lounge's Gambas Al Jillo

And one of Filipinos’ all time favorite, the lechon kawali! Crispy skin and tender meat, aaaah! Who could resist the temptation!

Lobby Lounge's Lechon Kawali

And another irresistible offering at the Lobby Lounge, the Crispy Pata! We Filipinos love our skin crisp and our meat tender, and yes this definitely got those qualities. (Melts!)
