where to dine in Cebu

TGI Fridays Cebu’s New Modern Look

TGI Fridays Cebu sports a new contemporary and chic look! The first update since its opening in November 7, 2008, TGI Fridays Cebu patrons surely are delighted with the new style and even charming new customers to try the food outlet’s American fare favorites which they are known for.

Clean modern lines, modish discs adorning the ceiling and that corner with a cozy U-shaped couch with a striking red tiled wall backdrop accented with small bronze drop lights were among the features I noticed as I walked in.

At the bar area you’ll get to trace TGI Fridays history festooned on the Heritage Wall where framed photographs retell the journey of Alan Stillman, the man who founded the restaurant in the 60’s. Also on the very end of the of the bar is a smoking room! You’ll also notice that the new look is minimalist, giving it a classy modern feel.

“The renovation had 2 phases and were completed in 40 days. It was planned that way so we can continue to serve our patrons and guests even during the updating,” mentioned Ms. Mitz Carreon General Manager of TGI Fridays Cebu. “Now TGI Fridays has a modern look, showcasing a more relaxed and spacious dining area,” she added.

The Food

TGI Fridays is known to serve a Western fare in big portions, just like how’s it served in the US. A few of my favorites at TGI Fridays are Beef Queso Dip,Caesar Salad and Friday’s Cheeseburger Sliders.  And in the last quarter of 2015, TGI Fridays Cebu will be launching it’s new offering, Fridays Roasted Chicken. Something to look forward to!

Beef Queso Dip. Spicy beef chili queso, topped with pico de gallo and fresh cilantro, served with warm chips.

Caesar Salad. Romaine Lettuce tossed with creamy Caesar dressing, grated Parmesan cheese and crunchy croutons.

It was 6PM and might be a bit too early for alcohol, but the “beeritas” was extremely tempting and thought it was just the right antidote for the heat spell we are are currently experiencing. These colorful and playful drinks are specially concocted by the newest restaurant and bar in Mango area – ‘N Door Lounge! These delectable beauties will debut during their soft opening tomorrow, May 22, 2015.

N Door Lounge 6

A great drink would even be much awesome paired with some munchies, and gladly found a perfect match for these beeritas! By the way, beeritas is a hybrid drink with your favorite margarita and a serving of beer in one single dose. Clever huh? So talking about a perfect match, ‘N Door Lounge’s Bulgogi Nacho is great with any of the beeritas. Nachos with minced bulgogi, jalapeño, tomato, onions with cheese, sour cream and hot sauces. Every bite on the nachos you get to taste the sweet light chili flavors of the Mexican jalapeños and sauces with sweet minced Korean bulgogi which was in total harmony. Seriously good with the beeritas!

N Door Lounge 2

And another interesting flavor fusion is ‘N Door  Lounge Kimchi Fries. Everyone’s favorite just got an intriguing twist. It’s French fries topped with minced bulgogi, kimchi, onions, tomato, jalapeño with cheesem sour cream and hot sauces. Yum!

When I travel overseas, the thing I miss the most from my hometown is lechon.  But when I get back to my regular programming, then it starts to sink in – I miss the places I explored, people I met and of course, the food I savored on in that particular country.

I recently had a 10 day trip to Singapore, exploring the country’s different museums. Been to the Lion City countless of times and I love the country for 2 main reasons:  one, it’s less than a 4-hour flight from Cebu, and second, I personally find Singapore refreshing – always innovating and creative. And when in Singapore, I make sure I don’t miss a gastronomic hawker adventure.  Makansutra is probably the most famous tourist stop in sampling a great spread  of hawker dishes from the country. Arm yourself with agility though, for you need to find a table yourself for you to be able to dine in at this food strip.

Singaporean cuisine is really interesting. Multifaceted and flavorful from influences of neighboring countries like Malaysia, Indonesia,India and western colonizers – yet surprisingly  maintaining a unique Chinese Singaporean identity.

My recent cravings for the multicultural Singaporean cuisine led me to dine at Chop Chop Food Centre. Offering authentic Singaporean dishes, it felt like I was transported to Singapore during my evening chow.

Okay, the place may look a bit fancy for a hawker place but the food experience is as authentic as it gets. With fresh ingredients (without the use of powder and MSG flavor enhancers ) and some ingredients straight from the Lion City, this is the real deal my friends.

CCFC2

Beef Rendang tops my list of Chop Chops best dishes. Was craving for this the most, since this was the last thing I had before I left Singapore last March. (Well, part of the last meal I had in SG, along with beef green curry and double fried chicken. teehee ) Chop Chop Food Centre’s Beef Rendang was a real treat. Imagine tender beef cubes, melting in your mouth with great flavors of sweet coconut milk and spices, and then chewing on it releases even more of the flavors. Aaaahh, soo good!  (Chef Vance, you need to prepare a serving of this on my next visit. :P)

CCFC3

A serving of Laksa would normally suffice as a meal for me, but this time it was just the beginning of a Singaporean feast. The spicy noodle soup is awesome paired with tarik or a glass of Milo Dinosaur. Katong Style Laksa 268PhP.

CCFC1

You’ll never go wrong with Satay! Perfect as an appetizer too. Chicken and Pork Satay 188Php per serving

CCFC4

Sambal Sting Ray’s surprisingly good.  The sweet fresh taste of the sting ray’s meat enhanced by the sambal – a perfect match! Sambal Sting Ray 298PhP.

CCFC5

Chop Chop Food Centre spares its customers the effort of going through the process of cracking the crab shell open to get to the goods. Their version of the famous Singaporean chili crab, dubbed as Chili Crab Meat, is equally as good.  Chili Crab Meat 288PhP.

CCFC6

And want more Sambal? you can have it with your rice too! Sambal Fried Rice 188PhP.

CCFC7

Milo Dinosaur is perfect with anything! And Ice Kachang (118PhP) to end a Singaporean feast was just fitting.
CCFC8 CCFC9

Are you hungry already lah? Get your fill of Singaporean hawker cuisine at Chop Chop Food Centre now!

And did I mention that Chef Vance Borja is also the man behind my favorite noodle house in Cebu? Seriously,  I was so teary eyed and overjoyed meeting THE MR. UNCLE NOODLE! sniff sniff. Though Uncle Noodle doesn’t have a physical store anymore, you can still order through a message on their Uncle Noodle Facebook Page. 🙂

Formerly La Bella Napoli, the well loved Italian bistro has been constantly adding more entrees to their menu to entice the Cebuanos (and international guests) even more with authentic Italian dishes. Now La Bella Pizza Bistro, they stay true to their promise of quality and only the best ingredients in every course they serve.

iLuvCebu team recently visited their 35-seater al fresco branch at The Gallery Mabolo and took the liberty of sampling  the newest addition to La Bella Pizza Bistro’s carte.

La Bella 1

Enjoyed a glass of Spritz (150php) as I watched the pizza dough being kneaded, topped and baked on the traditional wood fired-brick oven. Spritz is a wine-based cocktail made with wine, Aperol and soda water.  A great aperitif to prepare me for the feast to come.

La bella 3

And yes, all pizza doughs are made fresh – moments after you place your order. All pizzas are then topped with premium ingredients and baked on classic wood fire- brick oven for less than 10 minutes. And for mozzarella addicts, the selection served with fresh mozzarella are must-try pizzas.

La bella 2

La bella 5

For our appetizer, we had Parmigiana di Melanzane (Price:300php). A lovely combination of baked tomato, mozzarella and fried eggplants that melts sumptuously together in your mouth. Yum!

La bella 4

And then a serving of pasta to share – tortelloni alla bolognese (320php). The pasta looks very similar with tortellinis but a bit larger. The fresh handmade ring-shaped pastas are stuffed with mixed meat in Bolognese sauce.

La bella 7

And oh boy,  the delicious smell of freshly baked pizza as its been taken out of the oven! uuuhrg!  (gets you real giddy! ^_^) Principessa had me at mozzarella (and arugula.. tehee)!  Made with tomato, fresh buffalo mozzarella, parma ham and fresh arugula – it’s currently my new favorite pie at La bella Pizza and Bistro!

La bella 8

“Eel pran-zoh erah de-lee-zee-oh-so, grah-zee da-veh-roh La bella Pizza Bistro.”

Do you love La bella Napoli/ La bella Pizza Bistro too? Tell us your favorites, we’d like to try ’em too! 🙂

You also can enjoy authentic Italian fare at their other branches at Koa Tree House in Gorordo, Piazza Elisea in Talamban and Karancho in Maribago.

Quality is a definite trait present in all Abaca restaurants and hotel. There’s a misconception though that anything associated with the gilt-edged hospitality group would cost someone an arm and a leg. But the community-based Abaca Baking Company might reverse that wrong impression.

ABC 8

Barely 2 weeks old, ABC is already working with an average of 100 kilos of quality unbleached flour daily used in baking varieties of fresh breads and pastries. Current bestsellers include the croissants (which get sold out in less than 2 hours as per store manager Mr. Sherwin Osabel), cinnamon buns,  bagels and vegetable focaccia. Chocolate Truffle, Lamington and Vanilla Creme Puffs are the house’ pastry top picks. ABC serves fresh grind- Italian roasted Danesi Arabica coffee everyday. An Italian cup perfect for any bread and sweet treats.

ABC 4

Arriving at 4PM for afternoon snacks, the team unfortunately wasn’t able to sample the buttery croissants. Instead ordered something on the All-Day-Breakfast Menu. We had a serving of Bagel with three variety cream cheese spread,  Vanilla and Caramel Lattes and an extra bagel. Olive, salmon and garlic flavored cream cheese are perfect with the fresh bagels!

ABC1

ABC 7

And had our fill of afternoon sweets too- Mini Chocolate Bundt, Chocolate Cream Puff, Lamington Cake and Choco Chip Cookie Sandwich. Lamington Cake is a soft chocolate  sponge cake with vanilla filling in the middle and textured with desiccated coconut. The Cream Puff has this melt in your mouth custard inside that is deliciously infused with home made vanilla. And my ABC personal sweet treat favorite is the Chocolate Chip Cookie Sandwich – two chocolate chip cookie with vanilla filling and dipped in chocolate. You should try it!

ABC 5 ABC 6

Abaca Baking Company’s pricing is very much like Starbucks. One of my personal pastry picks -Chocolate Truffle caramel is priced at only 35php – and a cup of coffee for less than 100 bucks! And definitely way more instagrammable than any other coffee shops around town, would you agree? teehee!

ABC 3

ABC 2

And who would not notice the awesome  paintings, wall and menu board artworks by Happy Garaje and various artists from The Qube Gallery which add to the homey cafe ambiance.

ABC 9

ABC 11

Lucky to be able to have a quick chat with Chef Jason Hyatt about the upcoming projects Abaca Group is venturing on. Coming real soon is a new Abaca Group Hotel in Mactan and a luncheonette in Fuente. More feats to look forward to from the hospitality group. Chef Jason also had an easter egg revelation about ABC’s kitchen – a group of 4 very talented PWDs bakers.  Just awe-inspiring!

Done with afternoon coffee session, we headed out of the cafe and Mrs. Anna Hyatt sent out a warm smile and a folksy invite, “You should come back at around 7-8AM when croissants are on display. You’ll love it! ”

Enjoyed everything I’ve tasted so far and  will surely be back for more of ABC’s All-day breakfast, coffee, breads, pastries and that buttery croissants everyone is buzzing about!

Cafe Racer 3

I bet almost everyone have heard  or even dined at this automobile concept diner in North Reclamation Area. Introducing a new blueprint for a restaurant and executing it well are two good reasons why Cebuanos have embraced the concept with open arms, drawing in automobile enthusiasts, bike aficionados, foodies and well, basically everyone who loves eating to Cafe Racer.

It was a Sinulog weekend and the place was packed as we tried to grab dinner, but luckily we were seated immediately. It’s not hard to decipher why Cafe Racer has been a hit just after a few months from opening. The indoor and the al fresco dining areas are so photogenic, that when a guest posts a photo on any of  his/her social media account, it would entice his/her friends to visit the diner.

Oil drums made into chairs, a Volkswagen Van as a makeshift counter, an automobile tool drawer turned utensil keeper and a vintage motorcycle are a few of the interesting elements you’ll find  at the indoor dining area.

Cafe Racer 5 Cafe Racer 1 Cafe Racer 2

And at the Al fresco area, you’d find a Volswagen Beetle turned into a griller and a gas pump machine that pumps beer by the liter. Pretty cool!

Cafe Racer 4

Yes, the place is pretty but how’s the food? The team tried 4 dishes which our friendly waitress suggested.  She proposed the Baby Back Ribs but did mention that the rib recipe is the same with Mooon (also belonging to Pages Group of restaurants.) The group ordered the Kansi, Osso Buco,  Grilled Porkchop and the Breaded Porkchop. Kansi is served on a sizzling plate with chunks of tender meat and a pre cracked bone so it’s easier to scoop out the bone marrow. Love the creaminess but thought it was a bit salty. The Osso Buco serving came with 3 round slices of beef with a buttery gravy sauce.  The Grilled Porkchop is smothered with sweet barbecue sauce, pretty much the same taste with Mooon’s  Baby Back Rib sauce. It gets a bit dry in the middle though. The Breaded Porkchop would be my favorite among the 4 dishes we ordered. It was seasoned well (even without the gravy) yet not too salty. Taste wise – Cafe Racer does serve good food and we can’t wait to try their other dishes! Maybe next time, we’d try to have our car washed too! ^_^

So have you dined at Cafe Racer? Tell us what you think, we’d love to hear from you!

Fiesta Bay Seafood Restaurant Mactan

Fiesta Bay Seafood Restaurant Mactan

We Filipinos love fiestas! It is an occasion where food brings everyone together under one roof. Chef June Fernandez  (one of my favorite culinary visionaries in Cebu) of Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa made mention of this new restaurant just along the resort belt and recently paid the restaurant a visit to check out what they have to offer.

Arrived at 5:00PM just before they open their doors at 5:30PM, we were 30 minutes too early for dinner but the friendly staff welcomed us with warm greetings and did accommodate my friends and I nonetheless. If the hospitable servers don’t give you that fiesta feel yet, then the colorful center ceiling at the main dining area and the banderitas would surely do. The warm lights make you feel like you are right at home. Fiesta Bay exudes a genuine Filipino hospitality in a modern and stylish festive scene.

Fiesta Bay

Fiesta Bay

Fiesta Bay

Along the resort belt, it was a surprise that the items here aren’t lavishly priced. Per serving prices are the same as casual dining restaurants in the metro which range from 110php-350php for the mains.

The Bulalo which was brothed for hours gives a natural beefy soup sweetened by the corn  and radiating  layers of flavors from the beef , the vegetables and other ingredients. And you’d dote on the fall- off- the- bone tender beef.  Different from other Bulalos I’ve tried, Fiesta Bay’s version is not too salty and less oily, for the excess oil was scooped out during the cooking process. So when your done sipping on your Bulalo soup, you’d not feel like you smooched on a bar of butter.

Fiesta Bay 4 Fiesta 4

Fried grouper in Mango Salsa on fried sotanghon is another interesting dish on the menu. Strips of tender fried filleted grouper in a summery sweet mango with fresh green and red bell peppers salsa that’s just perfect together.

Fiesta Bay 5

Fresh lobster in lemon garlic butter sauce! The creamy lobster meat was superb by itself  but the lemon garlic butter made it even more impeccable.

Fiesta Bay 7

Singapore Chili Crab. For those who love it sweet and spicy, this would be a great dish to revel on. Fresh crab already precracked when served so you’d not worry to get all messy and instead enjoy the dish.

And the Singaporean Salted Egg Crab is another dish that would definitely make me miss dining at Fiesta Bay! The Salted egg cream gives more flavor to the fresh crab meat. Yum!

TIP: The fried buns are even more delicious when dipped in either the Singaporean Chili Crab Sauce or the Salted Egg Sauce.  <3

Fiesta Bay 13

All time favorite Adobo rice! With bits of fried crunchy pork meat, each spoonful of adobo rice is a delight!

Fiesta Bay 8

Always leave some room for dessert! Filipino favorites Guinomis and Bukayo Bunuelos to end the feast.

Fiesta Bay 9 Fiesta Bay 10

Drinks? I recommend the refreshing house drink Citrica!

Fiesta bay

Great service, distinctly appetizing dishes, homey festive ambiance (not to mention an awesome song playlist) and with a reasonable priced menu, Fiesta Bay Seafood Restaurant is definitely on my list of favorite restaurants in the metro and I bet will soon be in yours! 🙂

Can’t wait to be back!

A-One, Conching’s and Cebu Lechon Belly Opens at SM Hypermarket Cebu

Cebu Best Restaurants Now Open at SM Hypermarket Cebu

Three of Cebu’s local restaurants have found a new home at SM Hypermarket Cebu. Delectable meals enjoyed by both locals and tourists can now be savored at the spur of your cravings. Hypermarket shopperscan now indulge in traditional styles of Conchings Native Chicken, the enticing barbecue of A-One Tinola ug Sugba and everyone’s favorite spicy lechon belly of Cebu Lechon Belly.

So what makes these restaurants’ best sellers taste soooo good?

Since 1968, Conching’s Native Chicken has been in the BBQ business and because of its unique taste, patrons have come back again and again. “We always use native chicken, that’s half of our secret, the rest is our family’s trade secret,” said Pia Layam, owner of Conching’s Native Chicken.

What started as streetfood selling grilled items at Pier Tres, A-One got recognized for their tinola and sugba dishes. Selling only the freshest catch and grilled to your liking. “The Sea is full of treasures. It’s really a bountiful gift we must cherish,” said Esmeralda Paca, one of the daughters of the late owners.

Giving each customer only the premium part of the roast, Cebu Lechon Belly made it up the lechon ladder and into the hearts of Cebuanos and tourists as well. “It’s hard to compete with with the favorites but what we have introduced is something that people really want. We’re just giving it to them,” said Marlon Gochan, owner of Cebu Lechon Belly.

SM Hypermarket Cebu is now more than just grocery, clothes and home essentials shopping stop but also a dining destination as well. These three restaurant started serving sumptuous meals at SM Hypermarket Cebu North Reclamation Area since December 17, 2014 and  are open daily from 10AM-9PM.

No. 9  is an ancestral home in E. Benedicto Street, beautifully renovated into a modern dining space with a classic touch of wood, emanating a delightfully cozy and soothed ambiance. The restaurant who’s barely a month old is quite making a buzz for their Mediterranean and Latin wood-fired cuisine – which most people I know who have tried their offerings describe as unique and exclusive.

The bar greeted us as we stepped inside the restaurant and paced along a few tables on the side. We walked to our right and found a real cushy spot on the sofa with a really catchy red and black portrait of 2 brothers. We ordered the Pork Belly, Fideo Negro, Arroz Con Pollo and Morcilla. Took photos of the dining and the al fresco/ garden area as we wait for our food to be served. Veritably a stunning eat-out-chill-out hideaway.

No. 9 1 No. 9 3 No. 9 4

The Food

Arroz Con Pollo (410.00php). Wet rice, chicken, pancetta. This  so far is my favorite at No. 9. It’s flavorful and hearty.

No. 9 7

Pork Belly (Price: 420php) with Wild Arugula and salsa verde. Pork belly baked on wood-fire until outer layer turns gold, then topped with a handful of wild rockets and drizzled with salsa verde dressing. I love arugula and this come second on my No. 9 favorites.

No. 9 5

Fideo Negro (Price: 450php). Broken Noodles, squid, chorizo, ink, aioli. Surprised and happy that the dish wasn’t that salty and with the right amount of seafood flavor.

No. 9 6

Morcilla ( 280php). Blood sausage, pickled apples, pumpkin.

No. 9 8

I love No. 9’s Arroz Con Pollo! And it was a first time to have pork belly paired with arugula which I think is a very good idea! Definitely would be coming back to try the other 2 offerings I haven’t sampled yet and their soon to be additions on the menu.

So have you dined at No. 9 already? Share with us your experience! 🙂

Mooshi Green Bar

Mooshi Green Bar

Mooshi  Green Bar Cebu has expanded their carte which would delight all  health buffs and green fanatics.  With their purpose of introducing healthier options to the Cebuanos, Mooshi added healthy sandwiches and salads to complete their green fare. Most of us have this misconception that when we  announce something that is “green” or “healthy” it would bang a leafy-eeky sapor or a mental thinking that they’re not enjoyably satisfying. Mooshi together with The Lazy Chef might have the right formula to change that mistaken belief with their delectable hearty new  green offerings.

THE MAPLE BURGER (475php), is a juicy grilled beef patty with American Cheese, lettuce pickles, tomatoes and mapled bacon – sided with onion rings and fries. The juicy patty was made more interesting with the sweet crunch of the mapled bacon.

Right after Gillian (bydetails.blogspot.com) and I chose a winner for Waterfront Cebu’s Easter Egg design contest, I suddenly had a latte craving. So I drove straight to this new cafe in Lahug. Still on it’s soft opening, this week old cafe looks promising. But I don’t want to get my hopes up until I get to try their offerings.

The cashier and the waiter welcomed me with smiles as I approach the counter. I smiled back and greeted them both a good afternoon. I ordered cafe latte  then asked the waiter for food suggestions. He tipped Beef Stroganoff Pasta, Cheesesteak Sandwich and Twin Chops. Initially thought of ordering the Chicken Parmigiana but remembered that my 40 day of no pork , no beef lent sacrifice ended today.  I totally deserve a big sandwich brimming with juicy beef strips smothered with lotsa’ cheese! Aha! Cheesesteak sandwich it is!

I chose to laze at the comfy looking couch with hindi looking patterns at one end of the cafe, where I leeched some power to charge my iPhone. Teehee 😛 . And have you noticed the inverted-coffecup hanging lamps? Pretty neat right?

Opposite from where I’m loafing and sipping on my latte, is a very colorful door. And no it’s not a portal to Neverland or to the Easter Bunny’s den but the toilet. ^_^

Though I’d say this to a cupcake and not my cup of coffee(referring to the quote on the wall beside the magical toilet door), I have to say the uneven textured wall’s clever.

And this is the snuggest looking couch in the cafe. And its situated just beside this very French looking office door. ^_^

Do not judge this latte by its looks because it does taste good. I love how its frothy, bold but smooth and creamy at the same time. Cafe Latte, 85php. Also available in cold variety at 130php.

Cheesesteak Sandwich, 195php. Beautifully served on a wooden chopping board, thinly sliced beef, caramelized onions with cheese sauce on a 6-inch bun. I love how juicy the beef slices were, and it did go well with the caramelized onions but the cheese sauce could have been a bit cheesier and thought it might need a bit more pepper to taste. But hey, that’s just me and thats how I prefer my Cheesesteak Sandwich. 😉

Well, this is just my first visit and will definitely visit again to make a follow up review. But so far, I give a thumb up to the very attentive and friendly staff during my visit. I enjoyed my latte and am intrigued and excited to try their other coffee concoctions. And the cafe’s decor and homy ambiance are pluses as well.

I personally think that the type of music played in a restaurant/cafe somehow defines a restaurant/cafe. And I hope they’d be able to compile a better playlist. ^_^

Anyone would like to try  Tazza’s Hazelnut latte with me next time? 🙂

Dining at Circa 1900 is not just a gastronomic adventure but also an experience, showing how rich the culture and history of Cebu is. Circa 1900 is a colonial house restored into a restaurant, piano bar and a function venue featuring varied international cuisine yet paying respect to the Filipino culinary heritage by drawing influences through the use of local ingredients.

The staircase leads to the main dining area, the piano bar, some private rooms and the veranda. The porch is also an espresso/cocktail  lounge where you can enjoy a good drink while waiting for your  companions.

With great efforts to retain the original architecture and material of its era, Circa 1900 gives out a chic, classy warm ambiance. The main dining area is suitable for 23 persons while the piano bar can accommodate 20.Two private rooms can take in 14 and 9 diners. The veranda, on the other hand, can hold 16 guests.

Charmed by this beautiful place, I prepared myself for a hearty fare by one of my favorite chefs, Steve Shrimski. If you love Canvas’ Australian/International chows , then you should try Steve’s take on International food with a Filipino twist. I knew from the start that this night will be a burpy one.

The feast started with the complimentary appetizer, mushroom duxelle canape – bread topped with cheesy chopped mushroom. The melted cheese complimented well with the soft mushroom, giving it a subtle cheesy salty flavor.

Circa 1900 Cebu

Then from the appetizers menu, we had  the Double dipping and the Asian Pancake Rolls.  The Double Dipping (245php) is served with bread, croutons and wafers with Blue cheese and bacon & Sour Cream dip and roast black olive tapenade with truffle oil dip. Asian Pancake Rolls (175php), slow braised orange duck wrapped in Chinese pancake with mini beancurd fries.

And then came the salad. Roast pumpkin and olives with grilled dukkah chicken with spinach, fetta in red balsamic vinaigrette dressing. (265php) I love how the chicken is rolled in dukkah, giving it a crunchy texture and nutty notes.

The Creamy Seafood Bisque (285php). Rich and bold flavored soup with prawns, scallops, squid, clams. mussels and fish.

Since I am on a lent sacrifice, I won’t be eating pork and beef until the end of lent. So I tried two dishes from the list of  main entrées, a fish and chicken course.

Grouper Fillet, 535php. Egg battered grouper fillet with ripe mango, noodle salad in asian dressing. The mangoes gave a summery sweet hint to the fillet, yum!

Chciken Bringhe, tumeric and vegetable paella with coconut and raisins, topped with sauté chicken and sprouts, 275php. This one would be on my list of Circa favorites. I haven’t tasted Pampanga’s versionpf Bringhe yet, but I thought having the paella cake’s top toasted was genius! It gave a natural light smokey flavor to the milky, semi sweet paella cake. The chicken was tender and flavorful too.

Both bestsellers, Char-grilled Beef tenderloin and Crunchy Pork belly were also served. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to taste it because of my sacrifice for lent. But it did smell great! And seeing my friends Mark and Kristine’s reaction as they were chowing down on these entrées , it must be really good. 🙂

Desserts! No matter how much we eat,  we always make sure to leave some room for dessert. We had Maja Blanca Cheesecake (135php), Banana coconut cake with malunggay ice cream (125php), pumpkin pie with caramel poached banana(95php).

I enjoyed how light the pumpkin pie was that it seemed like it melted in your mouth. And the malunggay ice cream was a surprise as well – with that wasabi kick in the end, it made me scoop again and again.

And I bet you I made you all hungry, to cool you off, let me tour you at the ground level of Circa 1900, where Circa’s 2 function rooms are , a retail concept of “tabo” which means gathering of different products featuring mainly Cebuano products, a space for a gallery to display the artworks of Cebuano artists.

Tea of Spring’s Revitalized Chinese Menu

Everyone finds comfort in Chinese food and my recent lunch at Tea of Spring was simply  nostalgic. As I walk to my table, can’t help but notice families enjoying their lunch that ignited a flashback of my childhood. And yes, I do find Chinese food binding. When we were kids and  my siblings and I get into a petty fight, my dad’s initial solution is a hefty dim sum lunch. 🙂

Tea of Spring at the Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa recently revitalized their Chinese menu, adding a few more delectable and sumptuous Chinese dishes that will surely be on your list of Chinese favorites.

A few of my new favorites are Seafood and meat dumpling in supreme soup, Crispy aromatic duck served with sour plum sauce, Stir-fried string beans Szechuan style and Deep-fried seafood roll with mango. And who doesn’t love Tea of Spring fried  rice with XO sauce, a must order when dining here at Tea of Spring. And my all time favorite at Tea of Spring and a perfect way to end a sumptuous meal is to a have a serving or two of  homemade mochi and chilled mango puree with pomelo and sago. ^_^

One of Mabolos’s hidden dining spots, Cadi Shack diner is along Breslin Street and is home of the great tasting 200php Pork Steak! The restaurant’s  cadillac blinds make it hard to miss. Getting inside the restaurant, the first thing you’ll notice is the classic cadillac on display at the other end of the restaurant. Accommodating around 35 customers at a time, the restaurant gives you a cozy intimate feel.

Deliciously grilled and served with gravy, Cadi Shack Diner’s Pork Steak is so good! Juicy, well seasoned and a good portion (serves around 2 medium appetite rice eating Filipino diners), priced at only 200php!

We also ordered Apple Chutney Chops (Price 190php). Pork steak with apple sauce and sided with peppered cabbage. ( Not really a fan of this dish )

When we experience something that’s a bit off when dining at a restaurant, we do tell the waiters about it politely. It’s good that they know what negative things you have to say so they have to improve on it. But deliver it politely and constructively, and not offensively.

An example was when the cucumber drinks we ordered  at Cadi Shack Diner  had a strong (not just a hint, but strong) taste of ginger. We asked the waitress if the drink had ginger on it, and she replied, “it’s only pure cucumber and water.” We told her that the drinks  had a strong taste of ginger. And she just smiled. I think she didn’t know what to answer, so she answered with a smile. Nonetheless, we were able to convey to her that there was something wrong and maybe next time it wouldn’t be like that.

With that said, we will be back at Cadi Shack Diner for more of the awesome 200php Pork Steak and another try of a glass of cucumber drink, maybe it’ll be perfect next time.  ^_^

Choose one (1)  salad or a soup, one (1) entree/pasta (except for the steak which is available for ala carte only) and a dessert.

I ordered Mixed Green Salad for my starter, Surd and Turf for my main course and Peach Mango Ice  Cake for dessert.

Mixed greens with candied walnuts, grapes, dressed with strawberry vinaigrette. Can also be ordered ala carte for 188php. I highly recommend this!

Skewered surf and turf with cajun butter. I love surf and turf  and one of the very few things my  beloved Aunt and I share. 🙂 The Suite Room’s version is good, but I like  the smokey and flavorful surf and turf served at Casa Verde better. And they could’ve used prawns instead of the itsy bitsy shrimps. I had my meat done medium well. Surf and Turf can also be ordered ala carte for 238php.

Also tried the mushroom soup and Caesar salad for starters, herb roasted chicken (main course) and Cappuccino ice cake,  caramel apple ice cake and Tocino del cielo desserts.

When this was served, was a bit disappointed by just looking at it. The leaves were soggy. The dressing was good though, not overpowering the other elements of the salad.

Branch Address: Basak Lapu-lapu CIty

Food: Barbecue and streetfood

Good time to dine:  6pm-11pm

Manang Fe Barbecue is the place where you can find one of Filipino street food favorites – the betamax or locally known as dugo. It’s a bit rare to find betamax in our kanto or  sidewalk grills here in Cebu. And if you are craving for it, this is the place where you can get your fill of the street food favorite. So what’s betamax made of? It’s actually scalded chicken blood then cut into rectangular pieces, resembling the shape and the color of the betamax tape, explaining why it is called such. 🙂

Dining at Manang Fe Barbecue, first you have to choose your meal at the food station. Aside from betamax/dugo , you can also order other street food like adidas or chicken feet , isaw or tina-e , atay or chicken liver , chorizo and balunbalunan /batikon. And for people who are not that adventurous with food, you can order the pork barbecue and the chicken barbecue.
