No. 9  is an ancestral home in E. Benedicto Street, beautifully renovated into a modern dining space with a classic touch of wood, emanating a delightfully cozy and soothed ambiance. The restaurant who’s barely a month old is quite making a buzz for their Mediterranean and Latin wood-fired cuisine – which most people I know who have tried their offerings describe as unique and exclusive.

The bar greeted us as we stepped inside the restaurant and paced along a few tables on the side. We walked to our right and found a real cushy spot on the sofa with a really catchy red and black portrait of 2 brothers. We ordered the Pork Belly, Fideo Negro, Arroz Con Pollo and Morcilla. Took photos of the dining and the al fresco/ garden area as we wait for our food to be served. Veritably a stunning eat-out-chill-out hideaway.

The Food

Arroz Con Pollo (410.00php). Wet rice, chicken, pancetta. This  so far is my favorite at No. 9. It’s flavorful and hearty.

No. 9 7

Pork Belly (Price: 420php) with Wild Arugula and salsa verde. Pork belly baked on wood-fire until outer layer turns gold, then topped with a handful of wild rockets and drizzled with salsa verde dressing. I love arugula and this come second on my No. 9 favorites.

No. 9 5

Fideo Negro (Price: 450php). Broken Noodles, squid, chorizo, ink, aioli. Surprised and happy that the dish wasn’t that salty and with the right amount of seafood flavor.

No. 9 6

Morcilla ( 280php). Blood sausage, pickled apples, pumpkin.

No. 9 8

I love No. 9’s Arroz Con Pollo! And it was a first time to have pork belly paired with arugula which I think is a very good idea! Definitely would be coming back to try the other 2 offerings I haven’t sampled yet and their soon to be additions on the menu.

So have you dined at No. 9 already? Share with us your experience! 🙂

Open for Lunch and dinner (call to reserve)

Started with cooking for his friends on gatherings, Alduz Aizon or Duz to his friends wanted to share his cooking with the rest of the Cebuanos. He begun welcoming customers in November 2012 at their address in San Antonio Village and had been getting good reviews from diners.

With no restaurant signage outside, it may seem unwelcoming but wait ’til you get inside and meet the people. 🙂 Too late for lunch and too early for dinner, we arrived at Duz Grill at 4PM with the property’s blue gate still closed, which was then opened a few minutes after and we were greeted with a smile. 🙂

Duz Grill

Duz Grill

The al fresco area can sit around 30-35 customers  and the indoor dining around 15-25. The outdoor dining area is romantically set in the garden which gets more charming when warm lights lit up at night. And an air conditioned dining area is available inside Alduz’ house  and the owners themselves make you feel like you are a family friend being invited for dinner. We chose to sit inside the ‘entertainment room’ under the branches of the heart tree. Hahaha, okay it’s really not called the heart tree but with the capiz hearts hanging around it’s branches, it’s just appropriate to call it the heart tree, right? 🙂 And yeah, when you step on the front door of the house, try looking up and see how they turned some old wood into light decors. Pretty cool!

Being first timers here, we had the bestsellers – Spicy baby back ribs and the Spicy Meat Burger. And their interestingly good house blend iced tea.

Duz uses flavored ice for the house blend iced tea so the iced tea gets more flavorful as the ice melts. Price 35php.

Its meat is tender yet not dry, and the sauce is mildly sweet and mildly spicy – this Spicy Baby Back will surely make you wanna come back, again and again at Duz. Yum! Price: 180php.

La Vie Parisienne Cebu

I have always been a very proud Cebuano, and one of the so many things that I can boast about Cebu is the endless list of great food choices we have here and with prices that’s so reasonable. An addition to that list is La Vie Parisienne Cebu.

From one of Cebu’s finest French restaurants, La Maison Rose , comes another delightful French cadeau from the Lhulliers, La Vie Parisienne. It is a French bakery, deli and a wine library.

The smell of buttery dough envelopes as you enter the bakery. On your right is an oven full of fresh bread being baked and on your right, a display of breads and a few collection of wines.

La Vie Parisienne Cebu

The bread dough are prepared in France and then baked at  La Vie Parisienne Cebu.  So you get the real deal French Croissants for as low as 25php a piece. Bite into the crusty flaky outer layer, then a soft buttery interior – mmmm, so good I tell you. Best enjoyed with a cup of hot coffee.

“Are these really from Laduree France?”- I just have to ask the  the counter girl thrice, and she replied with a smile and an uttered yes with a nod every after I throw her the question. hahaha. I enjoy biting into a crusty exterior then a chewy cookie to a gooey and naturally flavored filling macaron. And the macarons at La Vie Parisienne Cebu  is as good as my favorite  TWG tea infused macarons. <3 My faves are the pistachio , strawberry and lime macarons.

Formerly a function room in Casa Verde’s main branch turned chic and fancy, The Suite Room offers a 3 course meal for just 500bucks. Accommodating only 14-20 people at a time, be sure to make a reservation when dining in at The Suite Room, specially on weekends.

Choose one (1)  salad or a soup, one (1) entree/pasta (except for the steak which is available for ala carte only) and a dessert.

I ordered Mixed Green Salad for my starter, Surd and Turf for my main course and Peach Mango Ice  Cake for dessert.

Mixed greens with candied walnuts, grapes, dressed with strawberry vinaigrette. Can also be ordered ala carte for 188php. I highly recommend this!

Skewered surf and turf with cajun butter. I love surf and turf  and one of the very few things my  beloved Aunt and I share. 🙂 The Suite Room’s version is good, but I like  the smokey and flavorful surf and turf served at Casa Verde better. And they could’ve used prawns instead of the itsy bitsy shrimps. I had my meat done medium well. Surf and Turf can also be ordered ala carte for 238php.

Peach Mango Ice Cream Cake for dessert. A layer of mango on top of  the ice cream with bits of peach. on a thin layer of crust. Yum! The Peach Mango Ice Cake can also be ordered ala carte at 218php.

Also tried the mushroom soup and Caesar salad for starters, herb roasted chicken (main course) and Cappuccino ice cake,  caramel apple ice cake and Tocino del cielo desserts.

When this was served, was a bit disappointed by just looking at it. The leaves were soggy. The dressing was good though, not overpowering the other elements of the salad.

I love creamy soup! And classic mushroom soup is a winner for me! <3

Had a weeklong birthday celebration and my last birthday hurrah for 2013 was a dinner with my family. <3  We love Japanese food and decided to have  yakiniku at Wakamatsu. Without making any reservation, we were lucky to got a table for dinner. Yipeee! (well it’s my birthday celebration so God’s been extra kind to me. :P) But seriously, you should make a reservation when you plan to dine here. For dinner, everything on the menu  is on Eat-All-You-Can (except for the drinks which would be charged and just 1 round of dessert for free). And price is just for 580php. But be sure to order just what you can consume or else you would be charged double. 🙂

Seasoned angus, buttered scallops, squid, maki salad, california maki and chili shrimps would be our top recommendations to order for this restaurant. Chicken was seasoned well too. On top of the awesome food, service is good! <3 This would be one of the restaurants that we would love to visit over and over again. 🙂

On October 1, 2012 will be the grand opening BonChon Cebu. The first branch in the Visayas, BonChon Cebu is located at the 2nd floor of The Terraces Ayala Center Cebu.

BonChon Cebu

BonChon,  Korean  for “original village,” is a global restaurant brand that originated in South Korea in 2002. It began making waves in the global arena in 2007 as it entered the US market, captivating the discerning palates of the citizens of New York, San Francisco, Boston, Virginia and New Jersey. It then propelled to international shores with stores in Asia (Bangkok, Manila, Jakarta, Singapore) quickly following.

BonChon Cebu

BonChon Chicken Philippines opened its first store in November 2012. In just a little over a year with 28 branches in Metro Manila, Bonchon may be considered one of the fastest growing fried Quick Service Restaurant in the country, apart from the biggest Korean-style crispy fried chicken chain locally. As of September 24, 2012, there are 28 BonChon stores in Metro Manila, 1 and Davao and on October the 30th branch in Cebu, which is the second largest branch in the country!

BonChon Chicken Cebu

BonChon serves contemporary Asian/Korean-American Quick Service Restaurant cuisine that highlights the super crispy yet light and non greasy original Korean Fried Chicken secret. While the chicken recipe is tandard in all BonChon outlets worldwide, other items on the menu may vary from one country to another. The Philippines offers the widest range among the international BonCHon community. As a testament to the wide range of the Philippine menu, many locally-developed recips have found their way to international BonChon stores.

BonChon Chicken

The crispy chicken secret that inspired a global cult following: BonChon Chicken is super crispy yet light and not greasy, with hot moist juicy meat, sauced with sumptuous soy garlic or spicy glazed. Spicy Glazed goes well with beer! ^_^

BonChon Fish and Chips

BonChon fish Taco

Two of BonChon seafood offerings which began as a local seasonal offering that have become popular items on the local menu are: BonChon FIsh and Chips ( the brand’s take on the English classic) and the raved about BonChon Fish Taco which was inspired by the California food truck mishmash of Korean and Mexican. Edd and I love BonChon’s Fish Taco! One of our BonChon favorite! Another seafood offering is the Crispy squid rice.

BonChon Beef Bulgogi Over Rice

BonChon Beef Bulgogi in a wrap

BonChon also serves the traditional Bulgogi – Asian style as beef bulgogi over rice, Western style as beef bulgogi in a wrap and the Bonchon style crunchy chicken bulgogi over rice.

KoYo blueberry torte banoffee pie

And who would’t love a sweet ending? Tarty, creamy and cool BonChon’s  Ko-Yo (Korean Yogurt) served in alternating layers of graham pie crust and a choice of blueberry torte or Banoffee pie. 🙂

Tavolata Cebu

A.S. Fortuna boasts the rise of a new commercial property – Design Center of Cebu. The black glass finish of the complex gives it a chic and classy look. The arcade proudly sits at the vicinity of the famous pinetree of A.S. Fortuna along P. Remedios St. that some people would call the area “pinetree.”

Aware that the bistro is owned by the Abaca Group, we know that we are in for a treat at Tavolata Cebu. Tavolata, an Italian word for tableful or a gathering at the table, it sure is a great place to dine with friends,  family or a date with your better half with it’s cozy and intimate ambiance. And we would advice that you make a reservation. 🙂

Tavolata Cebu

Travolata Caesar (395php). Egg, lemon, romaine and Pecorino toscana.  No frills salad yet flavorful.

Tavolata Caesar

Tavolata is proud of making their pasta fresh everyday using the finest ingredients.

Squid Ink Fettucini (495php). Sautéed shrimp, squid, octopus, tomatoes and chili on squid ink fettucini. (iLuvCebu.com recommends this dish)

Squid Ink Fettucini

Campanelle (445php).  “Little bells” with fennel sausage, braised greens in cream.

Campanelle

Herb Crusted Parmesan Chicken  topped with marinara and mozzarella sided with spicy broccoli and arugula.  (695php)

Herb Crusted Parmesan Chicken

Slow Roasted Pork Belly  with risotto milanese and gremolata.   (795php)

Slow roasted Pork Belly

Tavolata Pizzas are interesting for they don’t come  in perfectly round shape crust. An indicator that each pizza is made and hand tossed just right after you ordered.  If you are planning to have pizza at Tavolata, we would advice that you order it first and have the order prepared at the kitchen for it will take time for them to prepare it and have the waiter come back after he forwards the order to the kitchen.

I just love Arugula on my pizza, so this was my first choice – Proscuitto pizza (455php). Arugula, tomato and mozzarella on a Tavolata crust. The crust is crunchy on the outside but is soft and a bit chewy on the inside, yum! 🙂

Proscuitto Pizza

Truffle Pizza (455php). Ricotta, mozarella, brocolliand asiago.

That definitely was a gastronomic adventure! Thank you for reading and join us again on our next piggin out session guys! 🙂

It’s crazy  I haven’t blogged about Pizzeria Michelangelo considering that my family and friends enjoyed a lot of lunches and dinners at this Italian restaurant. The pizzeria, seats around around 40 people, is warm and intimate. The pizzas at Michelangelo are to die for and a real steal for the prices are inexpensive , ranging from 220php-360php.

The ambiance

After running some errands for our dad, Edd and I had a sudden craving for cheese and arugula and chorused on eating dinner at Pizzeria Michelangelo. We ordered our favorite Robertino pizza made with tomato, mozzarella, farmer’s ham, arugula and parmesan cheese. iLuvCebu.com  recommends Pizzeria Michelangelo be one of your food stops when visiting Cebu!
