These few weeks,Cebu has been busy with gastronomic dawnings. From last week’s Coffee Prince’ opening, we were delighted with the crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside Chocolate Waffle and those cute frappes topped with cotton candy. We also have featured recently the new delectable breakfast offerings at Canvas, perfect to jump start any day of the week.

And just  last August 19, a new kitchen has opened in Salinas Drive and I was lucky enough to get first dibs on the restaurant’s offerings before it opened. The modern- industrial chic look of the restaurant may give you an impression that the things on the menu might be lavishly priced but to my surprise, they’re actually not. Price starts at 140php and my favorite Drunken Angus is reasonably priced at just 370php.

The combination of cement, brick, wood and leather reminded me of a modish home in the county, accented with warm lights, it gives out a very homey feel. A great way to just chill with friends and family over dinner and a great place to impress your date or that special someone with a great meal paired with a serving of wine. 🙂

On the Menu:

Appetizers.

A personal favorite on the list of appetizers at Brique is the Truffled Shoestring Potatoes. Grab a good amount of truffled potatoes, then add some fried basil and  bacon then dip it in the Sriracha mayo, YUM! Truffled Shoestring Potatoes, 250php. Homemade truffle flavored shoestring potatoes with bacon, grated Pecorino and fried basil. Served with sour cream and Sriracha Mayo.

The Spinach Gorgonzola kinda made me crave for a glass of some fruity wine. Cabarnet Franc or Cabarnet Sauvignon anyone? 😉 Spinach Gorgonzola Dip, 175php. Minced spinach served with creamy Italian blue cheese, gorgonzola. Served with a bowl of cubed bread.

Soups

Had Squash and Carrot and Cream of Broccoli. I love how both are rich and creamy with fine bits of vegetables. Squash and Carrot made of oven roasted squash and carrot pureed with cream. Cream of Broccoli is fresh broccoli pureed with cream. Soups at 140php and 150php respectively.

Main

Grilled marinated curry chicken legs are tender to the bones. Loved it even more when I drizzled it with the cilantro yogurt. Serving comes with rice or house salad.(260php)

A personal favorite, Drunken Angus is US Angus beef brisket braised in beer and barbecue sauce. Super tender meat that it almost melts in your mouth with an awesome lightly bitter sweet bite to it and feathery barbecue taste. (370php)

Dessert

Don’t Count Your Calories! And you should definitely not when you order this Halo-halo inspired dessert at Brique. An ube cake with Macapuno and custard cream served with two scoops of ice cream and red beans and corn flakes. (190php)

Can’t decide on what to get? Leche flan or Cheesecake? Get the best of both worlds with Cheesecake Flan! Flan made with cream cheese topped with caramel. (120php)

With the food being prepared fresh as you order, food may take as much as 15-25 minutes to be served. Servers would be giving the customers a heads up about this, but you know when you are hungry right? Waiting is such a pain! So when you are too hungry and couldn’t able to wait for about 15 minutes for your main to be served, then it might be a bad idea to dine here. Or maybe order an appetizer for a quick fix.

Having all that thoughts on food out of my head made me real hungry! And I did loosen my belt after that Brique dinner. Shhh. haha. Overall, the experience at Brique was good. I fell in love with the truffled shoestring potatoes, the Squash and Carrot soup and the Drunken Angus and probably the things I’ll be going back again and again at Brique. 🙂

Open for Lunch and dinner (call to reserve)

Started with cooking for his friends on gatherings, Alduz Aizon or Duz to his friends wanted to share his cooking with the rest of the Cebuanos. He begun welcoming customers in November 2012 at their address in San Antonio Village and had been getting good reviews from diners.

With no restaurant signage outside, it may seem unwelcoming but wait ’til you get inside and meet the people. 🙂 Too late for lunch and too early for dinner, we arrived at Duz Grill at 4PM with the property’s blue gate still closed, which was then opened a few minutes after and we were greeted with a smile. 🙂

Duz Grill

Duz Grill

The al fresco area can sit around 30-35 customers  and the indoor dining around 15-25. The outdoor dining area is romantically set in the garden which gets more charming when warm lights lit up at night. And an air conditioned dining area is available inside Alduz’ house  and the owners themselves make you feel like you are a family friend being invited for dinner. We chose to sit inside the ‘entertainment room’ under the branches of the heart tree. Hahaha, okay it’s really not called the heart tree but with the capiz hearts hanging around it’s branches, it’s just appropriate to call it the heart tree, right? 🙂 And yeah, when you step on the front door of the house, try looking up and see how they turned some old wood into light decors. Pretty cool!

Its meat is tender yet not dry, and the sauce is mildly sweet and mildly spicy – this Spicy Baby Back will surely make you wanna come back, again and again at Duz. Yum! Price: 180php.

When we experience something that’s a bit off when dining at a restaurant, we do tell the waiters about it politely. It’s good that they know what negative things you have to say so they have to improve on it. But deliver it politely and constructively, and not offensively.

An example was when the cucumber drinks we ordered  at Cadi Shack Diner  had a strong (not just a hint, but strong) taste of ginger. We asked the waitress if the drink had ginger on it, and she replied, “it’s only pure cucumber and water.” We told her that the drinks  had a strong taste of ginger. And she just smiled. I think she didn’t know what to answer, so she answered with a smile. Nonetheless, we were able to convey to her that there was something wrong and maybe next time it wouldn’t be like that.

With that said, we will be back at Cadi Shack Diner for more of the awesome 200php Pork Steak and another try of a glass of cucumber drink, maybe it’ll be perfect next time.  ^_^

Had a weeklong birthday celebration and my last birthday hurrah for 2013 was a dinner with my family. <3  We love Japanese food and decided to have  yakiniku at Wakamatsu. Without making any reservation, we were lucky to got a table for dinner. Yipeee! (well it’s my birthday celebration so God’s been extra kind to me. :P) But seriously, you should make a reservation when you plan to dine here. For dinner, everything on the menu  is on Eat-All-You-Can (except for the drinks which would be charged and just 1 round of dessert for free). And price is just for 580php. Heart Tea

Tea Place: Heart Tea

Address: i1 I.T. Park, Lahug Cebu City (Beside Krispy Kremes)

Operating Hours: 8am-2am daily

With the burgeoning of milk tea places in Cebu and the humid weather, it’s crystal that the milk tea craze had hit our home Cebu. Am guessing everyone by now has their own milk tea and tea favorites. So what’s your favorite? We just came across this tea place recently which we think is a must try for tea lovers. Everyone might had passed through Heart Tea in i1 IT Park, but have you tried their tea concoctions? One thing I love about Heart tea is they have unique blends that you can only find here. Let me introduce you to some. 🙂

Coffee Konjak

Heart Tea Coffee Konjak. Yes, I thought it was a spiked drink too, but Konjak is actually a vegan substitute for gelatin and i Heart Tea added coffee to it.  The coffee konjak is very similar to coffee jelly drinks but its firmer.

Passion Fruit (Fruit Juice)

Yes sir, i Heart Tea does serve fruit juices as well. One of our favorites here is the Passion Fruit Juice. Don’t expect it to be all sweet, for it’s naturally flavored passion fruit and not the sugar flavored based fruit juice. Add some basil seeds for texture (15php).

Blueberry in Black Tea with popping yogurt

Under Heart Tea’s Fruit flavored teas infusions is Blueberry in Black Tea. Add popping yogurt for more flavor!

Basil Health Drink

This Basil Health drink with basil seeds is my fave blend at Heart Tea. Fruity yet with a citrusy warm hint and basil seeds for texture.

So for tea lovers who need to have a quick tea fix, visit Heart Tea at i1 Building I.T. Park Lahug Cebu City (Just beside Krispy Kremes) They are open from 8am-2pm daily!

Cebu may rapidly be changing to a super busy metropolis but every Cebuanos still keep the meticulous attitude, not settling for anything less and never allow themselves to be shortchanged. So when talking about food establishments, well let’s just say, its surely survival of the fittest! With so many restaurants taking root just about anywhere, there would always be names that ring who have stand the test of time and loved by fussy Cebuanos. One of these restaurants that is proudly Cebuano is Mooon Cafe. All of Moon Cafe branches are warm, homey and tropical. When seated, who would pass and not notice the orange table napkin set on your table holding your spoon, fork and knife.

Mooon orange table napkin

Moon’s signature drink the Suncooler is summery and radiant just like the tropical ambiance exuding from the restaurant’s hacienda aura. Orange juice with slices of lemon, calamansi, orange and watermelon is a favorite Cebuano thirst quencher! And did you know that Ayala Malls CUSTOMERS’ TOP PICKS awarded Mooon Cafe’s very own “SUNCOOLER” as the best in the coffee/cocktails category based from shoppers’ online votes? Now you do. 🙂

Mooon's Sun cooler

Mooon Cafe‘s Chimichanga, one of the restaurant’s bestsellers and my dad’s favorite, is made from crispy flour tortilla filled with tender, mild spiced beef, cheese, sour cream and salsa rojo and topped with strips of lettuce, cheese and sour cream. Price: 95php

Mooon Cafe's Chimichanga

And my personal favorite at Mooon Cafe is their Six-Stick Pork Barbecue. 6 sticks of pork barbecue marinated in special sauce. Served with atchara and rice. (Price 150php) Tender, juicy and a bit sweet marinated pork barbecue, just the way i like it!

Mooon Cafe's Barbeque

And introducing Mooon Cafe‘s new offering – Chicken Fajita! Marinated chicken that comes with wraps, sour cream and salsa fresca. Serves 3 and is priced at 195php.

Everything Yummy

Restaurant: Everything Yummy

Address: Piazza Elesia, Talamban Road, Cebu City 6000

Contact Number: +639178998669 |  +63 32 4065678

Food: American ribs

Wifi: None

Mode of Payment: Cash

Text and Photos by Andrew “Doyzkie” Buenaviaje

Everything Yummy takes their ribs seriously.  The overnight marinating, 3 hours of cooking and then the grilling is a labor of love that makes Everything Yummy’s American Ribs oh so tender,  oh so yummy and yearned by many. Started with giving slabs of their own recipe of American ribs to friends during the holidays, owner Mr. Hans Congmon and his partner then started getting orders from friends, friends of friends, and with Facebook’s help, they got orders outside their social circle, cooking the ribs at their home in Mandaue. The rapid rise of Everything Yummy’s  list of  clientele and patrons made owners decide to open a physical restaurant, thus the humble restaurant in Talamban seating 15 customers was set in motion just October of last year . Though the original plan was to mainly just “Ribs-for-delivery”, yet hungry customers just keep on pouring and dining in for those ribs.

Arrived at 6:15pm on a Friday  at Everything Yummy, good thing I breezed in before the peak hours which usually starts at 6:30pm and able to take pictures before the place got packed. When you plan on dining for lunch or dinner at Everything Yummy, be sure to call them to reserve a table for you and your friends or else you would be left with no choice but to wait for the customers to clear out the table or have the ribs to go. And be sure to be at Everything Yummy 15 minutes before your time of reservation and not be late or else have the risk of having your table be given to a line of waiting customers.  The place gets  really packed with regulars and foodies during peak hours but fret not rib lovers, for pretty soon Everything Yummy will be expanding to accommodate more regulars and new customers! The restaurant’s ambiance is warm, intimate and cozy. Simple and no fuzz.

Soft, tender and flavorful ribs smothered in delicious honey barbecue sauce, Everything Yummy’s charcoal grilled American Ribs is the restaurants main attraction. Everything Yummy got great comments from  local newspaper and magazine, not to mention great reviews from blogs and recommendations from regulars, saying Everything Yummy Ribs is Cebu’s best charcoal grilled American ribs – and I would agree to that. Owner Mr. Hans Congmon  adds that Everything Yummy uses prime cut ribs giving his customers the best that they deserve.

EverythingYummyRibs - Rib Quarter (Spare ribs) with Rice -185php

Everything Yummy Lemongrass Inasal is my personal favorite from the restaurant. Drizzle the sauce on the chicken, then take a bite on the crispy chicken skin, then tear the soft juicy zesty tender chicken meat, yum!  Inasal given a Cebuano lemongrass twist  with sauce made with healthy canola oil, achuete and spices.

EverythingYummy- Lemongrass Inasal Meal 95php

Singaporean Pepper Prawns is the owners’ original recipe but a deviation from the original recipe which supposed to be Singaporean Pepper Crabs. But since they can’t find a good supplier of crabs, they opted to try it with prawns and knowing it still tasted good, they added the revised recipe to the menu. I also noticed that the the prawns are deveined, so there would be no gritty or funky taste.

Everything Yummy - Singaporean Pepper Prawns 350php

2 of Filipino favorite breakfasts, Everything Yummy gives a dash of their own to their chorizo and corned beef. So what’s special with Everything Yummy’s version of these Filipino favorites? Special Homemade corned beef is made from 100% beef. It is less greasy and is fried until its a bit crunchy but not dry. My brother Edd would love this!

Everything Yummy Special Homemade Corned beef 195php / Corned Beef meal with rice and egg for 105php

Everything Yummy’s Spanish Chorizo. Chorizo without the skin fried with spices.

Everything Yummy Spanish Chorizo Meal with Rice and Egg 95php

And you might be wondering why the owners named the restaurant Everything Yummy, well for the simple reason that they make sure that everything they put on the menu is yummy not just to them but to their customers as well. The menu consist of just a few entrees and had been loved by the owners and their patrons even before the restaurant opened.

Cobo is serving milk teas, fruit teas, sea salt milk teas, Cobo  coffees, smoothies, pressed tea, chewsomes and my personal favorites and personal must try recommendations are Cobo Bubble Burstea (available in different flavors) and Cobo Snow Ice (available in solo and to share). Also a must try are Cobo Taro Milk tea and Cobo milk tea (bestseller). And a very thoughtful thing from Cobo is that you get to choose and control how sweet your milk teas would be – mildly sweet, mid or intensely sweet.

Cobo

I would suggest for first timers to order the signature Cobo Milk Tea or Cobo Taro Milk tea(70php for 16 oz and 80php for 22 0z) or a more exciting and definitely sunny choice would be any from Cobo Bubble BursTeas selection(80php for 16oz or 90php for 22oz). Having my first bursting bubble in my mouth, it really made me smile – no bull. I had the strawberry burst (a bursting bubble flavor) on the Cobo Valentine drink and the strawberry flavor just exploded in my mouth. Yum!

Cobo Snow Ice To Share with red bean, strawberry bursting bubble, taro, hanchew caramel, lychee bursting bubble, Green Apple cocochew

Another personal Cobo favorite is the Cobo Snow Ice available in strawberry, honeydew, taro, chocolate, original, mango, green tea and yogurt flavors (solo 40php/ to share 70php). Add Chewsome Combinations at 15php for single, 25php for twin ad 35php for triplets.

We love milk teas and sago/tapioca, so we might be a bit biased about Cobo, teeheee. But frankly speaking, Cobo is exciting and is surprisingly refreshing and truly not just another milk tea store. I will surely be back to taste their Cobo Crunch and other refreshments. And soon to open is Cobo Sm City Cebu branch. 🙂

Bago-ong  or shrimp paste is one famous dish in our country and is usually paired with hilaw na manga (green mango) and Kare-kare (stewed oxtail),  and is also one of the ingredients of pakbet (meat-vegetable stew).

Serving international cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner, H Cafe sees bago-ong in a different way by adding it in to their  BIPSTEK CEBUANO.

A Western inspired with a touch of a Cebuano taste. The caramelized onions complements the tender  juicy beef and to the variety of vegetables with Bago-ong or shrimp paste. Just enough of the salty sweetness makes it one of the cafe’s bests!
