Before rainy season dawns, went for one last sunny summer hurrah with my brothers Reymond and Edd, our dad and close friends Atty. Ethelbert and Marco in Coron. It was everyone’s first time to travel to the Northern part of Palawan and we were just so thrilled to explore the islands of this quaint paradise. Seated at 19A, I was greeted with an awesome view of the beautiful islands and clear crystal waters of Coron when the plane started to land.
After deplaning, we hopped on the van to Palanca Guest House, our home for 3 nights. Travel time from Busuanga Airport to Coron is about 30 minutes. You’ll pass by beautiful lush greens with cow herds on the way to the town of Coron.
Along Don Pedro Street, Palanca Guest House is conveniently located at the city center where the restaurants, bars and pasalubong centers are. It’s also just about 8 minutes via the tour tricycle service to the wharf where we ride the boat for island hopping. And guesthouse’ staff are very friendly and helpful. They even arranged our airport transfer and our island hopping escapade with Nice in Paradise Tours.
After we all have settled in our rooms, we then had lunch at a nearby restaurant. Then we had about an hour to rest before we start ascending Mt. Tapyas. We started to climb the 724 steps at around 4:15pm and arrived at the summit after 45 minutes. We stayed until the sun had set and had a fast descend. Next stop: Maquinit hot spring! You can hire tricycles waiting at the base of the mountain going to Maquinit Hot Spring.
TIP: Be sure you have done your stretching and bring at least a liter of water before ascending Mount Tapyas.
Tricycle rent is at 300php roundtrip (City Center to Maquinit Hotspring and back.). The Tricycle can carry a maximum of 3 passengers for the trip to Maquinit. The dusty and bumpy ride from Mount Tapyas to Maquinit Hot Spring is about 30 minutes. Entrance to the hot spring is 150php. Admission is from 6:00AM -8:00PM, and closes at 10:00PM. Travellers/ tourists usually go here after a tiring climb from Mount Tapyas to soothe those aching leg muscles.
We booked “Coron Island Tour” (Tour A) with Nice in Paradise Tours. The tour included a tour to Kayangan Lake, Twin Peaks Reef, Banol Beach, CY Island, Floating House and Twin Lagoons. The tour is priced at 850php per person inclusive of hotel to boat transfers, entrance fees, life vest, tour guide, lunch and snacks. Minimum of 5 people.
First on the itinerary: Kayangan Lake! Climb 150 steps to reach the lake. On your ascend, don’t forget to enjoy the view. Go swim around the lake and go inside the mini cave. And you can also snorkel around the lake and sea the rock formations at the bottom of the lake.
Next Destination: Snorkeling at the Twin Peaks Reef. Beautiful coral garden with a good concentration of fishes that swim right pass all around you.
Next stop, Banol Beach for lunch! We had lunch at a private spot in Banol, where we enjoyed a buffet style lunch and snorkeled around for a good 30 minutes. Nice in Paradise Tours’ food was really good.
Then off for a swim at CY Island for more swimming! ^_^
Then off to another snorkeling stop, The floating house! Beautiful lush coral gardens. Though I noticed there’s just a few fishes swimming around this area compared to Twin Peaks Reef.
And last stop for this day tour was twin lagoons! Swim swim! Notice how cold the top part of the water is and when you stretch your feet down, you’d notice that the water is warm. According to our tour guide Moimoi, the cold top layer is fresh water and the bottom part is the salt water from the sea.
It was 4:30PM as we sailed back to town and snacks were served. ^_^
TIP: Bring extra water, extra soda/ juice drinks, chips and snacks. Have your drink items to be stored in the cooler. Also bring your snorkeling gears to better enjoy the underwater life. Also when booking with Nice in Paradise Tours, we recommend you to ask for Moimoi as your tour guide.
It was an awesome 2-day so far, but the next day is my favorite part of this trip!
