We can never be too careful, specially now that cases of COVID-19 continues to increase daily in Metro Cebu, with no signs of it going down anytime soon. For many of us, we’ve been practicing all the necessary precautions to protect ourselves and our families against the pandemic – washing of hands more often with soap and water, practicing of proper hygiene, staying at home and going out only to buy the needed provisions, physical distancing, wearing a mask when going out and sanitizing hands with alcohol, when soap and water is unavailable.
Before all else, keeping ourselves and loved ones safe and healthy is top priority. Personally, I take extra care in sanitizing everything that goes in our household, since my dad and my aunt are both senior citizens, and are said to be more susceptible to the said disease. Whenever I get home from buying groceries, I put all the bags on one side of the house, remove my shoes and go straight to the bathroom to take a shower. Then back to tend the groceries, grabbing a table rug and alcohol. I start with wiping the plastic bags, and then the individual items in the bag, spraying 70% isopropyl alcohol to the rug every after the 5th item I wipe. Lastly, I slowly wave a LYFSABER Germawand UVC sanitizing light for about 5 minutes, about .25 to 2 inch over the items. That further precaution to keep everyone safer at home. And I also use it to sanitize my shoes, my electronic devices including my laptop and my phones.
I have posted stories of me sanitizing my groceries and incoming packages with LyfsaberPH Germawand, and been asked a lot if it really works. I’ve read a few articles about UV light, and learned which spectrum is effective in killing bacteria and viruses. According to clinical professor Philip Tierno (PHD) on an interview with NBC News, on the UV light spectra A, B and C, only C can kill germs.
“This light has a range of effectiveness, which interferes and destroys the nucleic acids of bacteria and other microbes,” Tierno explained, adding that the range of light can also disrupt proteins in the microbes by killing certain amino acids. They work best on smooth surfaces and have limitations, Tierno advised.
According to Forbes, multiple studies suggest that our phones are about the dirtiest objects in our lives, harboring on average nearly 20,000 distinct types of bacteria. Wiping them with soap and water, or isopropyl alcohol might not be the best idea. On the other hand, UVC sanitizing cases effectively eradicate bacteria and viruses without damaging them.
So does it work?
Lyfsaber uses UV-C light technology with the promise of sanitizing 99.9%. From articles I read on UV lights, I consider that UVC light does work. For extra precaution, I would continue to use it as the second step in my disinfection process. For my gadgets and electronics, I use disinfectant wipes, then the Lyfsaber wand.
And yeah, always be careful in using UVC not to shine the light in your eyes, and the skin. 😉
